DSLRs are far better in low light due to much larger sensors (about 15x bigger than most point-n-shoots.)
 
Have been looking at the equipment recomondations but what are the main essentials when looking for the best slr at a reasonable price?
 
There's enough different attributes that no DSLR is "the best" (regardless of cost, low or high), but they're all excellent and you're pretty much guaranteed to be happy to matter which way you go.
