Please share your experiences with Renting from DVC owners who post on this Forum. I really want to buy some points, but want to do my due-diligence with checking everything out :-) It would be great to hear from those who have booked their stays this way before. TIA

I am an DVC owner, I have rented some points when I had some that would expire otherwise. I use the Rent/Trade board to find renters. I always use a written contract that protects both the owner and renter and spells everything out to avoid any misunderstandings. The top of the rent/trade forum has lots of information posted for first time renters that you should read and fully understand before agreeing to rent points.

Each owner you work with will provide a different experience. The experience I had renting points may not be yours. If you want certainty, work with CRO.

There are some things that are pretty consistent.

Reservations are almost always non-refundable - and don't plan on changing your mind on dates/resorts or room size either. Once you make the reservation, its difficult to change. Some owners may be willing to work with you, but its best to figure that the reservation you make is the one you'll get.

Reservations need to be made far in advance. DVC books fully early. Lining up an owner eleven months - even a year - in advance is often important.

Reservations for high demand rooms may not be available at all to renters - its the rare owner willing to walk a BWV Standard View reservation over Food and Wine for a renter.

Currently there are more people interested in renting points from owners than owners willing to rent out their points. This is especially true at the high demand resorts. You may not find an owner - its a sellers market.

The owner will control the reservation to the moment you check in. You cannot change it. They can. They probably won't - but if their contract gets foreclosed on because they haven't paid their loan, or if their reservations get cancelled because they haven't paid your dues - you are out of luck.

I rented on here before I became a member. Found someone in my state which actually made me feel more comfortable and used him 3 times for rentals before I bought in. Now to rent my own points I use David's. It's just effortless that way :)

Have rented out our points many times in the past, and never ever had a problem. In fact many renters will email back in subsequent years to rent points again. So it has been a good experience for both us and those who have benefited from the points.

When I have extra points, I rent them using the rent/trade board and fortunately I have someone who has rented points from me four times, which has made it easier to manage the extra points and not always deal with someone new or unfamiliar with the process.

Be sure you have a written contract from the owner, spelling out all of the details of the deal and how they will or will not assist you if your plans change. Almost all owners state that once the points are rented, they are yours and no refunds are possible.

Good luck. BTW, I purchased resale, sight unseen, just because I knew Disney would have a superior product.

I have never rented directly from an owner because I would never feel comfortable entrusting a few thousand dollars to strangers (Yes, that may be just me). If you use one of the rental agencies, you can pay with a credit card, which offers at least some protection should something go wrong. I realize it costs an extra few dollars per point, but I consider the additional cost as insurance. Plus, I purchased travel insurance for the reservation as it was essentially prepaid accommodation. I am not sure if that's possible with private rentals.
