Expensive fares Syracuse to Orlando!

While I'm very much looking forward to our first trip home in February, I'm kind of surprised at how much the fares are from SYR to MCO during the "winter break" week of 2/15/04 thru 2/21/04.

This past April (week before Easter) 4 of us flew in for a 5 night stay for less than $1,000. Now, the best I can do for 3 is $900 during this February 2004 week.

Can anyone report if the fares will drop as we get closer to the end of the year and more airlines publish their fares?

We were hoping to fly out of Rochester NY (1 1/2 hours from Syracuse) on AirTran - direct 2.5 hour flights, but they have been holding out on publishing their Feb 2004 fares/schedules. Their January rates are $59 one way!!!!! with decent departure/arrival times.

Trans-Meridian - new carrier in Syracuse, offering direct flights to Orlando can't keep their website up long enough to do some option searching - suppose I could call them!

Sorry, just venting.....

Airlines know this is a Holiday week(President's week) so they know people will pay or drive:( .
The last 3 years we flew down President's week and always paid around $250 for non-stop(Pittsburgh-Orlando via US AIR)

This will probably be moved to the Transportation board rather quickly.:(

We have had great success with the new airlines out of Syracuse. My son and his family book during Feb. break for $63.00 each way. That's Trans meridan. Also have you tried Jet Blue or Expedia. I have never paid more then 200.00 round trip for a fare to Orlando out of Syracuse. Just keep shopping.

Lary,
Don't worry - if you want to fly Airtran just be patient. I've been watching their fares like a hawk and I really think their President's Day fares will be as good as you are seeing now. I had airfare with them booked for Thanksgiving at 900.00 for 5 of us and that was because I had to make a change. (Fare was actually under 900 originally). It is a real breeze flying out of Rochester. I've seen their fares consistently discounted over the last year during ALL major holiday time periods. We've had a very good experience with them.

Larry, sorry that I can't add anything to your question. However, I looked up your profile and

"professional meeting attender"!!! LOL :p

Have you considered Albany? My sister & niece flew non-stop from Albany to Orlando in May. They usually leave from Syracuse on a flight that stops somewhere. she loved going non-stop. Trans-Meridain had not yet started flying out of Syracuse at the time she needed.

Hey fellow Syracusan - We flew last time to FL out of Rochester on Airtran. We have never seen anything less than $200 out of Syracuse any time and that is why we checked into Rochester last April. We flew each way for much cheaper than out of Syracuse. The shuttle lot for parking in Rochester is only $3.00 per day versus $8.50 out of Syracuse for parking per day. Syracuse definitely needs to do something and I hope this Trans Meridian works and fares are lower. Good luck -

Larry,
I also wanted to mention that when Airtran does finally open their schedule the fares may be higher than you like. You might want to wait it out until they announce their sale fares. That is when I got great fares for both July 4th and Thanksgiving. I think it was a week or two after they opened up the schedule that the sale fares came out.
