Expedition Everest Challenge 5K Reg open and details

It just so happens I will be in Florida with my parents (mom 68 and dad 69) and we are talking about doing this. My parents are in reasonably good shape but my father cannot run due to having a fused ankle.

Website says:

"Pacing Requirement - The race will start at 7:30 p.m. The 5K course will shut down at 9:15 p.m. (15 minute per mile pace). The obstacle course will shut down at 9:30 p.m. and the Scavenger Hunt will close at 10:30 p.m."

Doing the math 15 min x 3.2 miles = 48 minutes. However if race starts at 7:30 and the running portion is shut down at 9:15 that is an hour and 45 minutes. Assuming the race really starts that gives an hour and half for the 3.2 miles.

My parents can walk 16 to 20 minute miles but 15 is hard to get to.

Questions:

1. Do you think it is a typo on the site and it is 15 min per km?
2. If it is a true 15 min mile do they toss you if you fall behind pace?

I have contacted Disney last week but no response. Anybody have any answers? My parents are really looking forward to this but they don't want to get tossed off the course.

Thanks,

Phil from PA

Update - Mickey just emailed me this week when I asked him the above questions and here is his response:

"Phil - the 5K start is divided into waves which is why the course shuts down at 9:15pm. If your parents were in the last wave and were having trouble maintaining the 15 min/mile pace, we may "leapfrog" them using a golf cart to put them a little further up the course. They would not be kicked off the course. "

I then asked Mickey this:

"I finally figured that out over the weekend. If we would register now we would have a better chance of getting in one of the earlier groups don't you think? Thus giving a little extra time to get it done.

BTW, my parents were upset you didn't have a seniors division. This coming from the people who are worried about getting it all done in the time alotted"

Mickey's response:

"Phil - If you register now you would have a better chance of getting in an earlier wave. I like their competitive spirit with the age division request! The party ends at midnight.

Let me know if you need anything else."

DH and I just registered. We are so very excited!! Our annual passes just expired, so it's a great way for us to get into a park without feeling like we're buying tickets. We start the Couch to 5K on Tuesday. We're leaving the kids with the grandparents!! I am so very excited!

I just realized Dh and my AP's expire Oct. 1; does anyone know if I can apply the passes we get with registration towards renewing our AP's?

I was wondering this too. Right now we are booked at POR for FD, so we have to get a 1 day ticket and pay rack rate to get the free dining. Right now, since we have a few people in our room, we come out ahead than paying the race discounted rooms, but not sure if we will if we can apply this ticket to an upgrade.

My DH and I signed up for this challenge a few weeks ago. I am really excited - it is my first race of any kind. I'm not athletic at all, so it is my goal to be in shape by the time this race rolls around. I'm kinda scared of the obstacle course though...I am really NOT athletic :scared1:. DH, on the other hand, is very athletic.

DW and I did the the EEC last year and both were not very athletic when we signed up. The couch to 5k plan worked good for us. Good luck with the training and the event :thumbsup2

DH and I did day one of couch to 5K on Tuesday. It was harder than I thought it would be, but we managed. Tonight it's day 2. I could hardly sleep the day we signed up. I never thought we'd be going to Disney without the kids until they were grown, much less running a 5K.

I also just finished a The Kingdom Keepers, Disney at Dawn, set mostly in Animal Kingdom. Great books if you guys are interested. Ridley Pearson is the author.

a timing ?

Who thinks DH and I can do Chef Mickey's at 5:00 (we will be there when it opens to stay on time)
Eat for about an hour - Jump in OUR car and go to AK for the kids race at 6:30 - I think this is when it starts
DD 5 will do kids race with DH watching on - I wacth DD 3
when DD 5 is done I start the 5K portion with my teammate 7:30 ish- from what I gather two female teammates willl be the 4th group to start so we will not be taking off until 7:45 earliest

I have never done this before, so I dont know how these things are organized, but I am a mom and used to having to be in 3 places at the same time. SO, if this can be done it is much preffered over having to switch our Chef Mickey Ressie - lets face it, they get you in and out ASAP to keep traffic flowing and we dont dawdle either ;)

Thanks for the tip and the good wishes! That sounds like a good plan for me. :)

You could do it - but it is not fun running on a full stomach. My DH & I will be doing the run and there's a reason why they have food at the finish line. Now, kids are different - so maybe not as bad. Either way, I hope they have fun!

Two friends and I did this race last year and it was a blast. Unfortunately with a trip in about 4 weeks and a possible trip in Dec. I won't be able to squeeze this one in. Maybe next year.

I ran this last year with 2 friends, and I wish we were doing it again this year.
If you are on the fence and you can afford it, sign up! You won't regret it. An absolute blast! Plus, you will probably find a few WISHers in their lime green race shirts, and they are always glad to talk to you!

Has anyone seen what the medal will look like for this years race? I just saw the medal for the Oct 11 race so I am surprised I couldnt find what the EE one would look like.

I have a question for those who ran last year. Is there any way to ask to get into one of the first waves that start the race? I am not a lead wanna be lol I have two knees in need of replacing and will need all the time I can get in order to be the NOT the last one crossing the finish line. My thought was if I could at least get into one of the first waves to start, this may buy me some extra time if I am having difficulty. Let me know if you have any advice. TIA

What did you guys think of the race...and the rain? We ordered new lanyards. We had a good time. It was our first event. We were planning to do it again for 2010, but it has been moved to June. We'll see if we can swing Disney in June.
