Expedition Everest Challenge 2014

Well, my weekend for EEC just got a little more complicated. I had to wait until I got paid to book the campsite at Fort Wilderness ... and they're all gone. Since none of the people I know that still live in Orlando have responded to my plea for couch space to crash on, I'm going to have to find a cheap hotel for myself. This traveling solo thing sucks sometimes. :(

As a fellow solo traveler most of the time, I hear ya! But there are some okay places off property that aren't super expensive. After Princess weekend this year, I decided to extend my vacation by a few days and had my Travel Agent find me something nice (read: clean, safe, and reputable), close to property, and with that fit my criteria for all non-Disney hotels she books for me--breakfast included. Every once in a while it is nice to stay off property.

I don't know what you're willing to spend but I just got a reasonable room at the Best Western in downtown Disney, under $100!

I'm not a fan go that BW.

But is there a time limit on this? I recently dislocated my knee and want to still participate. Will they "sweep" you?

I am sure there is some sort of time limit, because they have to make sure the park is clear of participants at some point. But with the nature of the second half of the event (the scavenger hunt) I think they are a little more relaxed toward sweeping folks.

On the website, they do mention the 16 minute pace.

With that said, what I've heard from previous participants, is that they're pretty relaxed about it.

$100 a night is still too much, I could get an RV campsite for less than that. I found a hotel right outside property in the Maingate West area (so really close to AK) for $30/night, I really don't care about amenities, it's a place to sleep and shower. I mean, I was gonna be sleeping in my car at Ft Wilderness lol.

To reinforce what's already been said, there is a 16:00/mi time limit. However, our experience in other races (not EEC) is that they have relaxed it a bit once you aren't obstructing any roadways that were closed for the event and such (e.g. people who made it to Boardwalk/EPCOT of Marathon Weekend seemed to be safe to go over a bit).

With this race being entirely within and around a closed park without having to impact streets connecting the other parks, I would think they might be a bit more relaxed for the race. Depending on where you start, too, you may already have a slight cushion since the time limit doesn't start until the last person crosses the finish line.

Sorry to hear about your knee and hope you're still able to have a good time at the event! Even if they do sweep, I think you can have a good time participating to the best of your ability - still picture opportunities to be had and the after party! Good luck! :thumbsup2

From the pre-race info sheet:

5K ADVENTURE RUN
Your journey begins in the Butterfly Parking Lot of Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park with a 5K adventure run that winds through the dark, exotic terrain of several continents. Be on the lookout for obstacles that will be in your path. Climb and crawl your way through the adventurous portion of your 5K run! Teammates ARE required to start and finish the 5K together and may assist each other on the obstacles. The 5K adventure run course will close at 11:45 p.m.

SCAVENGER HUNT
The scavenger hunt course will close at 1:00 a.m. at which point all teams still participating in the Scavenger Hunt must proceed to the Finish Line in the Butterfly Lot.

So it looks like as long as you make it thru the run before 11:45 you'll be able to start the Scavenger Hunt, and as long as you finish that before 1:00, you'll be considered a "finisher". Can you limpwalk a 5K in an hour and 45 min?

I think I am running in a costume - but I am feeling pretty silly about it sitting at home let alone at race time. It isn't much, but I wonder how many people will be wearing costumes?

It doesn't consist of much beyond a printed tank top and sock and and sparkle/tutu skirt because I am dreadfully worried about the heat (it is snowing here today and I have a wood fire roaring to keep the house warm - so anything about 10 degrees celcius is going to be a shock).

My friend and I are running in huge puffy sparkly tutus! Our shirts will say Yeti Besties and I am debating trying to find a horned head band to complete the look. If the the tutu gets in the way on the obstacles then so be it.

I figure I'll have enough of a time doing obstacles in just running stuff. I can't imagine adding a costume or tutu on top of that! Kudos to y'all that can!
