How do you all check for EXIF info in Windows? I heard that you just right clcik the photo and then click Properties, but when I do that all I see is the size of the photo, link info, type and dimensions. It doesn't show me anything else. Do I need a particular kind of software?

I always use Irfanview when looking on my PC... open the pic and hit "E" for exif, that shows you all the detail. I believe that you also need to grab the plug-ins when downloading (and installing), as the exif isn't built in in order to keep the main program as small as possible.

Thanks Groucho! I just checked out my Exif info for some of my chinese acrobat pictures. It's strange because it says the flash fired, but I had the flash turned off as we were in a darkened theater and not allowed to use flash photography.
Is this type of thing common? (Incorrect Exif info?) Is it generally accurate? I'm sure the camera wanted to fire the flash, but I was able to disable it and did. For most of my China trip (using P&S) I kept the flash off as I don't like the look of on camera flash -- it washes everything directly in front of the camera out, and everything else behind is usually too dark. Strange...

Hi Gdad,
Which version do you use? What would be the reasons why someone would need the $49 version? I saw on another post that someone, (maybe you???) edited their Exif info to protect their kids. Is that to be able to remove/edit the gps data?
Thanks!

I use the free version and it works fine. Some of the photo hosting sites strip the information. Smugmug- what I use for instance- only shows EXIF if you post an original size file. So if I upload a full resolution picture and display the medium size on a message board it will show no EXIF- if I resize it myself and upload say a 600x800 image and then post it full size then it shows. Kind of irritating but thats the way it seems to work at least on Smugmug.

Generally exif data should be 100% accurate but occasionally not all the info is recorded in an easy-to-read format. Some manufacturers (cough-Canon-cough) hide some of the info in a proprietary "MakerNote" which only they know how to read, so only their software can tell you what it is. Some have been completely or partially decoded, but if something's trying to extract data from a MakerNote and it doesn't have the right info, it may pull out inaccurate info.

By and large though, exif data is pretty reliable and quick difficult to change - it took me a bit of research and fiddling to find a good way to add focal length info to my photos taken with older lenses that don't transmit that data to the camera. Normally, you can only change exif comments, and the IPTC data stores the keywords, etc.
