I've always treated it like any other service... if the service was acceptional... we tipped... many people did not, many involve water so we sometimes don't think to take extra cash for this...
We did the Tulum Ruins excursion last year (while at Cozumel) and tipped the tour guide $20 for the 4 of us (DH, DSs, and myself) and from the reaction of the tour guide, he was QUITE pleased with this. We weren't sure what to tip either, but I was glad to know we must've tipped well, due to his reaction.
His reaction was: DSs had gotten off the bus first, then DH, then myself. As I was stepping off the bus I handed the tour guide the $20 bill and thanked him. He looked down and saw how much it was then hurried past me, up to DH, shook his hand and thanked him several times. lol
We were glad that he was happy with the tip because it was a relatively long excursion and we wanted to tip a fair amount.
To thank man is a cultural thing. I thought that ar first too, then I thought about all my multinatinal classes I am taking for my MBA, and cultural differences like that are very common. I am sure the guide did not mean it as a snub. As they say....When In Rome.....
Oh, I'm sorry, I should've said that he DID thank me first, then ran up to thank DH. I guess I mentioned the part about him thanking DH because he really had to run up ahead to get to DH, and that's the part that made me realize that he really appreciated the tip we gave him! lol He actually thanked EVERYONE as they got off the bus, whether they handed him a tip or not. He was very gracious.
