Exchanges Yay or nay?

I have done a couple of exchanges and enjoyed them and yes sometimes you will get items that you would not have picked out for yourself but that 's just the way it goes
the last exchange I did was the yc exchange and I loved everything I got

I do some of the exchanges. The exchanges that mommytotwo, meriweather, kirby and others host here are very good, no one ever gets left out. They make sure of that even if they have to keep the exchange open longer.

I like getting things I don't pick out, it's like getting a present

I do the ornament exchange every year.
I also have done a kid exchange and a yankee candle exchange once.

I would like to get involved in them once in awhile, but I live in Hickstown, USA and it would require a major effort to drive an hour away to shop for these items. I like the concept though, but just don't want that hassle; considering my circumstance, that it would end up becoming.

A side note (my opinion) I think its kinda insulting to insinuate you are going to get crap or junk. I've given and received many nice things and enjoy taking the time to find just the rights items. Alot of people put quite a bit of thought into what they are giving.

Agreed, I also find it insulting.
I do a few exchanges, mostly the Yankee Candle ones (I am addicted to them!) and I love the surprise of opening the box and seeing what someone else has picked out for me. It is lots of fun! I also love the Ornament exchange each winter, that is another great one!

I have done 3 so far here and have just had a great time doing them. The Locally made one was a little hard for me b/c I could not find the right stuff but other than that it has just been so much fun. Now I am signed up for the build a bear one. yes, they take time and you have to get to the post office and such but it is so exciting to send things to others and then knowing you have a present comming in the mail is just so much fun! I always get so happy when that package comes in and I have no idea what is inside. So cool! Just a nice way to get to know people and have fun on the boards.

On other boards we played secret sister and secret santa many times and I joined everytime. Always enjoyed it!!

I do keep telling myself to slow down though..lol I am a sahm so the only money I have to be spending is my money from whatever I can come up with to sell on ebay so I need to be careful in all my signing up before I get in too many. That is why I stayed out of the fave author and keeping warm one.

Nay - I have never even opened a thread with the word exchange in the title. I just think it would add more stress.

In my humble opinion, exchanges used on this board used to be a once a year thing that was highly anticipated. The ornament exchange was a fabulous way to meet other DIS'ers.

There are tons of exchanges going on all the time now, and I could never keep them all straight.

I have participated in a few exchanges, but now I only do the ornament exchange.

I've been in 3. I am "ok" with them. But I will NEVER run one again. Too much work and guilt, when not everybody sent out their exchange.

I've participated in a lot of exchanges since I joined this forum a few years ago. Why do I do it? I like to get fun mail and I love to get and give presents, so it is a win/win situation for me. I think that everyone who joins an exchange does so with good intentions of trying to please the person they are sending to. No one wants to give someone something that they will think is "junk".

I also give a standing ovation to the organizers of these. I would imagine it involves a lot of planning and keeping up with everyone.

Yes, I participate when I can and when it's something I would like and I can afford. However, with me it's not as easy as it is for a lot of you, as every exchange I participate in my package is International and International postage rates are not exactly cheap. So I have to be content to just read a lot and enjoy them that way.

Also, I have never, in all the exchanges I have done, received rubbish.....some have been way over the top and wonderful, others just the basic exchange item whatever that may be. But either way, never have I sent or received rubbish.

I participated in 2. I probably won't do it again but not because my experiences were bad - life is just too hectic. I do agree with the poster who said there are just too many. There seems to be at least one running every month. I like the ornament exchange and all Disney (which were the two I did before) but there is an exchange for nearly every taste.

I've done a number over the years and enjoyed them. I think the organizers work very hard and it is sad when people who say they will participate don't follow through. Life just got a little too busy and I quit signing up for them. I'm sure there will be one or more in the future that I will sign up for.
