Would anyone be interested in starting an exchange rate thread?

The idea being that if someone happens to go into a travel agent and sees the exchange rate, they can post it here for anyone elses reference?

And if you hear of any special deals going on (like American Express offering $50 free dollars if you get $1000).

I know I'd be checking it!

Anyone else?

Yep, would be interested if someone finds an exceptionally good rate

Good idea!! Just out of interest Lunn Poly/Thomson travel shops reckon they give the best exchange rates and the rate they quoted me was better than the rate listed in the papers. I bought the American Express card from them (it was free to set it up but usually costs £20) and got $50 free when I loaded it with £450. I think it worked out that it's now got $750 on it and I'll save a bit each month until I travel. It's certainly more useful than lots of individual travellers cheques and has the same security. I also have a PIN for it which I can use at any ATM.

I got a rate of $1.75 to the £ last week at Thomson on £200 cash exchange.

This site shows the actual bank rate as it changes, then shows it on a trend graph so you can see if the trend is up or down:

Bank Rate

The OnlineFX rate is currently $1.7532/£

I'd say that the AMEX card is a good deal but the waiver offer on the £20 card fee in lunn Poly/Thomson ends today.

After that not so good. I got two cards early in the week and it worked out at just over 1.85!!!

If anyone's interested, I have just ordered some TCs from Travelex at a rate of $1.777 to the £

We got some from thomas cook yesterday at the rate of $1.78

It's so hard to work out what's best isn't it!

The market rate for the $ is approaching 1.85 at the moment - the best tourist rates are set at something like 4-5c below this figure. But it is going up steadily. I'm figuring the $ is not very popular with all the problems Katrina has caused, but then I really don't have any idea how you can predict what's going to happen.

Last year we bought from Travelex when it was 1.86, but a few trips since then have meant that's nearly all gone....my oh my....what to do??

Need to get some currency, although we normally use a Nationwide card for majority of spending. But then at 1.80, that's a good deal for cash, and by November, if the $ comes back down to the low 1.70's it was in the summer, we will be better off buying cash. We also have loads of wedding stuff to pay over the next year and it makes sense to pay it off when the rate is good.

I know that a few cents rise isn't the world of difference normally, but when you are talking £1000's, it really does make a difference. Oh man

onlinefx is now at 1.78 hopefully rising!

We Don't exchange anymore. Last year paid for everything by Lloyds credit card even down to a $2 ice cream. When I got my statement following month compared to best rate we could have got before travel, we had saved over £50 by using the card. Will be doing same again this Oct and hoping rate continues to rise while we are away. Only time you can loose this way is if the rate plummets while you are there then you wished you had exchanged before travel.

We thought we would have a look around today while shopping to see what people was offering and we got 1.8 from Thomas Cook which I thought was good, so we got some more :teeth:

When we go for our travel money, Thomson always go to each shop in the shoping centre. and write down each one then does a price match.

Everytime they have to price match M&S.

Yeah we got ours from Marks and Spencer got an exchange rate of 1.78 today! If they sell it in store you dont have to order USD or USD travellers cheques.
