My IT guy accidentally trashed my computer yesterday by deleting a registry file that was necessary for.... . oh, say..... the computer to run at all. :sad2:

Anyway, he had to reinstall Office 2000 and everything else that I use, and in the process I lost all my settings, etc. A nuisence for sure, but not the end of the world. *sigh*

What may be the end of the world though, is that I am missing one of my most dearly loved and used macros. One I would cry to have to recreate. I created it to be used in all files, and therefore it was in a hidden workbook that opened with Excel (I know there is a special name for this, but for some reason it escapes me right now). It's like the "normal" in Word. Anyway, it used to be that my Excel wouldn't open two sessions without warning me that this file was in use, but right now I could open multiple sessions without a problem.

Can someone tell me where Excel would have stored this macro, and how I might go about locating it?? And please don't tell me it's lost forever if at all possible.

THANK YOU!!!!

Couldn't he have run system restore instead to restore your registry instead of reinstalling Office.

Ummmm - yeah..... our IT guy isn't the bright bulb on the tree. Let's just say, I, with self-taught computer know-how, but little to no formal training or education, often tell him where to find and how to fix things.

So, yes, he probably could have, but....... he didn't. :confused3

So you created a workbook that contained your macro, saved the workbook as a template, and then made that the default template so it was launched every time you started Excel, and your macro was available in all of your Excel spreadsheets - correct?

Look in your XLStart folder. The path should be something like: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\XLStart. Are there any workbooks there? Is your macro in it (them)? (You might need to do a search on XLStart to find the correct path.)

Once you find the file that contains the macro, you'll probably want to set it up to be your default template again.

If you go to help and search on "default template", you'll get instructions for creating a default template that will launch automatically. I think that's the best place to start looking for instructions for setting the xls file up as your template again.

If you don't find your original file in the XLStart folder, you should still be okay. Since you used this as the template for your Excel files, the macro should be saved as part of ALL of your Excel files. Worst case, find ANY Excel file you created that used the file with that macro as its template, and copy the macro from that file to a blank workbook, save that new workbook and make it your default template. (Did that make sense?)

Personal.xls is what you're thinking of & it's wiped out if you re-install Office :(

YES!!! Personal.xls was what I was thinking of. Thanks Annette....... sort of. Thanks for helping me...... I'm bummed about the news though.

KathyTX - Actually what I did is chose to store the macro in a personal macro workbook when I created it.... that way, it's accessible whenever I open a workbook instead of just the workbook I created it in.

Ugh - if he backed my "my documents" folder up before reinstallation, is it still lost??

Have you opened one of your XLS file to see if the macros are saved with it?

Wow your IT guy sounds like the IT gal we have at work.
Hugs to you.

Are you sure you didn't save it somewhere else before you put it in personel?
You might be able to find that one.
