Some friends keep asking me about the details of DVC. I patiently explain how it works and then they come back and tell me some mis-information that someone told them. I'll give you an example, the latest mis-info they got was that although the contract is for 40 years if you die before forty years you can't leave DVC in your will...the points just go back to Disney. I told them that is not true but they seem to believe everyone else but me...I'm so tired of trying to explain...sorry guys, but I have refered them to this board! They insist on bringing up DVC but from now on I am going to change the subject...they give me a headache...thanks for letting me vent...

I have read this quote many times, unfortunately I don't know who said it .But I do know that it really does apply when speaking with certain people about repeated trips to WDW and being a DVC member.

"For those that get it,no explanation is needed. For those that don't,no explanation will do."

Well, I am always amazed at how people will not know a thing about a subject other than what "someone" told them, and when they talk to someone who has some actual knowledge about the subject, they don't believe them. My mother does this all the time with medical stuff, and it drives me crazy. I've been a nurse for 20 years, and she'll ask me a question about a drug or a disease and when I answer her, she'll tell me that I'm wrong because her friend Gloria(who, while she is a lovely woman, is not now nor has she ever been in the medical field!!!) says something different and after all "Gloria knows because she reads a lot".

Anyhow, when people ask me abut the DVC, I answer their questions and if they challenge me I refer them to Member Services to speak to a guide.

Well, that's true.... unless I'm named as the benificiary in your will. We'd better not take any chances, I'll PM you right away with the info you'll need to give your lawyer.... don't want him to spell my name wrong.

there are other timeshares out there that can't compete with DVC - so they tell little "white lies" - this only shows their ignorance.

I have heard the same thing from another timeshare seller - they say almost the same thing " you can't will DVC" - they did not know at the time that I was a DVC owner - so I made them aware that I owned DVC and was very, very happy with it. they wisely changed the subject - of course after that statement I knew that everything else stated was also a lie and will never buy from these sharks.

most of the people here at work know that I am a Disney nut - and when they want information on WDW they come to me - but most of them don't understand timeshares in the first place - and DVC is in a place all its own.

so just be sure to tell your friends just because someone else says it doesn't make it a fact - check with the source! I also would want to know who was giving bad information out on DVC. It could possible be another timeshare owner who is trying to refer your friends to their place - other timeshare have always given money (lots of it) to refers - DVC only started that practice a couple of years ago.

My sister in law thinks all timeshares a scams, so she doesn't get it at all!

Having the attitude that all timeshares are a scam is a *very* good starting point. Of course, that's not true, but there's plenty of scumballs out there in this industry. That was my opinion of all timeshares before I read volumes of information on this website and others about DVC before purchasing. :)

I think they are (almost) all scams too.

My favorite is trying to convince them that your "timeshare" (usually said with a raised eyebrow) is really IN Disney. Even people who have been to WDW still don't seem to believe that Disney really does own condo size timeshares that you can buy.

Even if they believe that maybe Disney did really sell it to you and it's "in" WDW, they don't begin to understand the point system. At the end of explaining it they usually say something like, "so when do you get to use it?"

I've given up on getting them to believe that Vero and HHI are owned by Disney. ;)

Diane,

Seeing as how your sister is such a non-believer, the next time that you need some people to share those wonderful 2 brs that you always get, let us know. Heck, we are just up the road from you. We live on 42.

BTW Diane, I have never said "THANK YOU" to you. You are the one poster that gave me such great DVC info about 2 years ago, when I first starting looking. Then I dropped the issue until our last trip.

As for the non-believers.. Yeah I have some of them at work, but I have more people at the office come to me to help them plan their disney vacations. I think that the non-beleivers will come around sometime...

Has anyone ever heard-"for waht you are paying you could stay in a hotel"?

But isn't that the point-
I DO NOT WANT TO STAY IN A HOTEL!!!

I WANT TO STAY IN SOMEPLACE MORE THAN JUST A ROOM W/A VIEW.

I have heard the hotel one before, but my fav is for what you are paying you could go to Hawaii. I say I could have, but does Hawaii have a Mouse????? I don't think so...

I'm very fortunate. I'm the Disney expert among my "group" and, also being a research librarian, when people ask me a question they know I don't give an answer unless I know the answer -- otherwise I say I'll get back to them and I found it out. But honestly, if someone didn't trust my answers, I'd be so frustrated I'd probably find the correct answer in writing from Disney and give it to them. Do that once and from then on, they'll probably trust your answers.

Good luck with that!

I've found a pretty good way to explain DVC to people...

I compare DVC to a hotel reservation. You call the reservation number (MS), reserve the room & dates you want, and you pay with "points" instead of money. It's a "hotel chain", so there are several places you can stay.

Then the person says "You're not there a certain week?" and I just say no, I call and make whatever reservation I want.

That usually does the trick, and often leads to more questions about how DVC works. With that basic oversimplified knowledge, the rest of the explanation seems easier.

BTW, I was one of those "all timeshares are crooks" people too, and DW had to drag me kicking and screaming to the preview... bless her! :D

Peter,
I like your answer. May I borrow it? I'm constantly asked "What week do you own?" I reply "All of them!"

Feel free to "borrow"! That's why I "banked" it here :D

Believe it or not, we have invited them numerous times, but she insists they can't afford to go to WDW again, so they are going to stay in a resort at Fort Myers. I keep telling her there will be no accommodation costs, but she can't see it. That's all right. We have invited lots of folks along who LOVE it, and some we even try to keep their costs down, but doing more meals in the villa.

My father was convinced that all time shares were a ripoff and a waste of money. When I told him I bought a Disney Timeshare, he was outraged, and ranted and raved that I was a fool, wasted my money, it would be a flea bag hotel, etc.

He gets like this, and the best way to deal with him is to ignore him. He just isn't interested in hearing other people's opinions.

So when he had a conference in the Orlando area (in one of the hotels near Downtown Disney), I offered to let them (my parents) stay at my timeshare, OKW. They reluctantly agreed, but only becuase it was a free place to stay, instead of paying conferences prices for a hotel. I'm sure they thought it would be awful, but since it would be free, that would be OK.

I called them at OKW the day they checked it, to make sure everything was all right. They immediately started asking for details of this "timeshare thing". I explained as best I could, and when they still had qustions, I refered them to the Sales office. Since they were there on site, they were able to take the tour, and get all of their questions answered. Before they had checked out (after 6 days), they were proud new DVC owners themselves!

I did fax them some info that I'd gotten off these boards (buy where you want to stay, dues info at different resorts). Their guide was trying to sell them Vero Beach, but the info I sent them convinced them to buy at BCV.

So now they've been to Disney more in the last year than I have. They are retired, so they can go whenever they want.

So I guess the moral of the story is, some people won't be convinced of anything until they can see and touch it.

This is my laugh out loud response for the day!

I think hearsay is often more powerful than fact. Just say, "HMMMM, that's not the way I understand it. You know, you've always been better with details than I am. (smile humbly)Maybe you can call and get the updated information directly from Disney.
