It could be sick. Young animals will just stay there like that if they are sick. Call a wildlife expert to come over to help. The animal control officer or a local vet may have the name of someone you could call. He is cute though.
We sometimes see them eating our outdoor dog's food (if she's not around). We've never had one stay before so I agree with the others that it may be sick or injured.
Once there was one on my parents back porch eating the cat's food - I was in college at the time. I tried to push it off the porch with a broom and it just dug it's nails in and hissed at me. It is true they won't charge you but they won't give up their ground either.
This one does look like a baby - it may just be lost and not know where to go or what to do. I would call animal control to come get it. They can make sure it isn't injured and release it in a better area.
Well he left after about another hour last night. He was so cute. I told hubby we should keep him as our new pet..lmao Too scared he had a disease though. If it had not been for that fear i would have gone to try and hold him. I am pretty fearless of animals except when I think they have rabbies..lol He was so small and I felt bad thinking he was hurt or lost. I was going to call the animal rescue if he was still there after a while but he finally went on his way. I can't get over how long he stayed. Poor guy! Hope he get to where his family was. Hopefully I did not not blind him with the flash of the camera..lol I just coul dnot resist taking his pic.
I had one in my garage several years ago. A baby, just like this one. I carefully picked him up by the end of his tail (the fartherest I could get from his razor sharp teeth) and gingerly escorted him to the corn field. I think that he was happy to get back where he belonged!!!
As someone whos worked with wild animals I can assure you it was in your best interest to stay away from it and NOT try to pick it up. So good job As cute as they are oppossums and raccoons as soon as they open their eyes are can be some rather vicious little critters. Really... even with elbow length Kevlar gloves on you can still feel the force of that little jaw and you're just praying the gloves hold up!
