A friend of mine believes that a jealous person at work has put the "overlook" on her. While I am not Italian, I grew up in an ethinc area so I do know what it is, but not sure I believe in it.

Do you believe in it?

Is it reaslly just mind over matter typoe thing?

If you do believe, how do you remove it?

Oh yes - it's an Italian thing. :scared:

Relieving Malochia
Malochia, or the "Evil Eye," can manifest as an unexplainable backache, neckache or headache.

Read it all here.

ETA- A FM believes in lighting candles and saying prayers to get rid of it. Also, you're supposed to say 'God Bless' after telling someone they 'look beautiful' etc., this means no ill intention, thus no 'malookies' as we like to call it.

OK, hers is not headaches but bad luck. Is that the same thing???

We grew up saying "God Bless" after complimenting a baby so as to not "overlook" the child. But that is ab out all I know. :)

this is interesting because it's not just an italian thing...it's also a hispanic thing! my culture (well mostly the older generations) believe in the "ojo" which i guess is the same equivalent. if you give a compliment to someone you're supposed to touch what you're complimenting (hair, eyes, face) so you don't cuse that thing to turn ugly...when my youngest dd was 2 months old everyone used to say what a good baby she was and how she never cried. well we went to visit my family in south TX and she received lots of "compliments" sure enough that night she was very fussy and cried A LOT. my aunt and her BFF said to rub an egg over her and pray and then drop the egg in water that was supposed to tell you if the evil was expelled. was she given the "ojo" or did she coincidentally just have gas? IDK but the little "ritual" seemed to work!:lmao:

:confused3 Maybe, because I have had several FM's talk about if someone is jealous they can put the 'malookies' on you, thereby giving you bad luck, too. But don't hold me to it, as I think the Sicilians have a different thinking about that. We say God Bless whenever giving a compliment. Especially to baby.
The evil eye is believed to harm nursing mothers and their babies, bearing fruit trees, milking animals, and the sperm of men -- the forces of generation. The Neapolitan custom of making cornuto charms from silver (formerly sacred to the moon goddess Luna) and blood coral (formerly sacred to the sea goddess Venus) hints at the cultural survival of a link between the horned animal head and ancient worship of a neolithic-era mother- or fertility-goddess whose consort was a male deity sometimes called the Horned God. Whether or not this is the case, the cornuto is still a popular amulet worn by Italian men to protect their genitalia from the evil eye. :)
Maybe she should get some horns. :confused3 Does she have them in her car? As far as bad luck goes, my feeling: I think if you believe someone put the malookies on you, then of course you're gonna use that as an 'excuse' for lack of a better word. As in "I went to Vegas and lost my shirt, someone must have put the malookies on me".

God bless! :goodvibes

Never heard of malookies. Will have to ask about that one.

edited: Oh DUH! malookies would = mal occhio if you run the words together.

The mother of one of my mom's oldest friends was quite certain that my mom (as a kid) had something bad about her, and was constantly doing, for lack of a better word and b/c I've been reading Harry Potter, "counter curses" against her. My mom was so nice, but you could NOT convince Gerry's mom of that, LOL. (and yes, they were an Italian family)
