I got home this afternoon from work ready to start dinner. When I walked into the kitchen I saw a flood of melted ice cream and meat blood all over the floor coming from my freezer. It seems that this morning when DH grabbed his frozen pizza from the freezer for his lunch that he did not get the freezer door shut and everything proceeded to melt over the next 10-11 hours.   We had 1/4 of a cow in there. I had probably 40-50 frozen meals (Lean Cuisine, Smart Ones), ice cream, several big bags of chicken, etc.. I bet we had $1000 worth of stuff in there.

DH feels just terrible especially since I have told him over and over again that he has to push on the freezer door to make sure it is closed. I have found it open like that several times before but I have always caught it fairly quickly. Usually in the mornings I grab my Lean Cuisine to pack for lunch after him but today I decided to go with tuna so I didn't go to the freezer. That was one expensive tuna lunch.

Ugh. I'm sorry that happened.

Our fridge door was left ajar all night once. Although we didn't lose as much food as you, it was still quite a bit and a pain to clean up and replace.

Oh, I'm sorry. I know how that feels; we've done that with the refrigerator over a 3-day trip. :sad2:

We're not alone though. My sister and her husband always plug their garage freezer into the house by extension cord when they go on trips so that it doesn't trip the circuit breaker; well, recently they completely packed their freezer (over $300 of stuff), plugged it in, went on their trip, and came back and everything in the huge freezer was completely melted. They checked and the extension cord was plugged in... but the freezer wasn't plugged into the extension cord. :( It's a horrible feeling.

Any chance your insurance will cover the loss? Sorry about your bad luck.

Our freezer is on the bottom. I love the arrangement but about half the time you close the fridge on top the air pressure pops the freezer open just a bit and when you close the freezer the upper door pops open. It drives me nuts!!! We haven't lost any food yet, but I have woken up to a frosty kitchen floor and a fridge motor on overdrive.

I wish is was just our fridge freezer but this was our big chest freezer so it had a whole lot more stuff in it. It was FULL! I had been really stocking up over the last few weeks.

The same thing happened with my refrigerator once. Only my cats had decided to help themselves to anything that they thought was yummy. I lost the food and had three cats with stomach aches because they had been eating things they had no business eating. Fortunately, the vet didn't laugh straight in my face when I called to ask what I should do.

Becka-I just had this happen to me last month with our big deep freezer so I know exactly how you feel. I had worked up a good stock of stuff in there and Eli turned the freezer temp to 0! I went to get some more waffles and it was all thawed out, bloody, and smelly. I was sick to my stomach from both the smell and the waste.

I'm so sorry!! We lost everything in our deep freezer last month too. I also lost a freeze full last summer. Not fun and my insurance won't cover it. Right now the freezer is still full of that food. I need to get it out this week.

I'm thinking about selling the freezer it's not worth it if I keep losing the food in it.

That's awful! I'm so sorry you lost so much! And what a mess it must have been to clean up.

How did the liquid get out of the chest freezer? It shouls be solid on the bottom, shouldn't it? If there was a mess, I'd be worried that there was a hole in the freezer. Maybe your DH can get out of the doghouse yet! ;)
