When we're traveling by car I pack everything into these:

They fit really neatly into the trunk, and I can carry the whole "kit" or pull out a bag individually.
I write the bag contents on an index card and slide it into the clear pocket on top of each, so it's easy to spot. One bag is entirely toiletries, one is swim gear, one bag is my clothes, one is DH's, etc.
I love these bags and can't recommend them enough! There's also a compatible cooler bag and a bag designed for biking that's great for all sorts of gear.
