It's Letter Writing Time: The Department of Transportation Needs to Hear What You Think
The Department of Transportation recently went public with a proposal to charge airlines more money to land and takeoff during peak travel times at crowded airports. Obviously, if this occurred, the extra costs would be passed along to us, the consumers. In the same way that some trains charge more on commuter routes and some bridges charge heftier fees during rush hour, the proposal could mean that a morning flight from, say, New York to Chicago, could cost a whole lot more than an early afternoon or late evening flight, no matter how early you book your flight. This plan is one of several that Transportation Department officials are proposing to help reduce congestion in the air and increase the number of on-time flights.
Why are we telling you this? Because you can do something about it. Transportation officials are soliciting comments and suggestions for solutions from the public at large. That means you. If you've got it figured out how to solve the problems in the sky, write to the Department of Transportation. You can send a message electronically at dms.dot.gov (no preceding "www" is necessary), or by mailing a letter to:
