Every Wish That We Put Into Motion.... (comments welcome!)

It appears that I'm finally going to have to bite the bullet and try running early in the morning.
For what it is worth - In November I set a goal to start running in the morning. Life commitments and also the time change was making running after work very difficult. This led to me missing several runs or having poor runs. So I moved to morning runs during the week, usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I won't lie, it sucked a lot at first! And I missed a few times. Now it is getting more routine, last week I had no trouble getting out of bed for any of my morning runs. Plus it does feel really good to have that box checked for the day and I can walk my dog when I get home from work. Trust me if I can do this, anyone can! Give it a month and it will get a lot easier.

OK. Back on the horse.

Monday: 3mi EA 5mi EA. This felt SO MUCH BETTER than Sunday. And I'm chalking it up to going to bed an hour and a half early and making sure I actually ate Sunday night and during the day on Monday.

Tuesday: Rest. Spent 3.5 hours in the bleachers at basketball scrimmages. Finished my hat that I started back in August (I knit at sports events so I don't stress out as hard. Basketball season is looking like it's going to be very stressful this year.)

Wednesday: 4mi EA 5mi EA. Felt good again. Practice schedules are aligning for me to run at my normal afternoon time so far this week. Yay! Soon to change though.

Planned:
Thursday: 4mi EA this will probably also be 5mi.
Friday: 1mi EA + 4mi M Looking like this will be a morning run since everyone has something scheduled in the afternoon
Saturday: Most of the day will be spent on bleachers again.
Sunday: 9mi EA
Total mileage for this week was originally scheduled to be 25, with next week being peak week (30) and then stepping down a bit until race weekend. Since I missed so much mileage last week (and a bit in mid-November) I decided that I'm going to shoot for 29 this week, and then follow the plan out from there. My body doesn't know where it is in a training cycle with all of my missed days, and I know that over the summer I felt AMAZING a few weeks before my half and then ended up missing a few runs and having a not-so-great race day (even though it was a PR, it definitely wasn't the day I was hoping for.)

Well it’s a good thing my new (yellow) 1080s were only $60. I compared them side by side with my current ones and there are some major differences. I usually wear a womens 10.5 wide. Which should be the same as a mens 9, which is what these are. Except it’s not. The forefoot of the base (foam) is at least 1/4 of an inch narrower in the mens and it’s also narrower at the widest part of the heel base. *sigh* here’s hoping the only difference is the foam width and not the whole thing. The shoe part feels the same.

Actually they don’t feel the same. They feel like a normal width womens shoe. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least I know that they should work for anything under 10mi without blisters.

Ugh, that's too bad. There IS a difference between men's and women's lasts (the base shape of the shoe). It used to be that they just shrank the men's shoes and added colors for women's sizes, but some shoe companies are starting to recognize and make completely different shoes for men and women. Sorry it bit you this time!

Thursday: 5mi EA. Wore the yellow shoes discussed in my previous post. No issues other than they aren’t as wide as I was expecting.

Friday: ended up being my rest day with how everything else fell with school and no naps, and a 3:30 basketball game.

Saturday: 1mi EA + 4mi M. Ran this in the morning (8:30) which felt really weird and I ended up with a headache after even though I drank my coffee and ate breakfast before running. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 90/30 intervals for M pace which was really weird compared to how I’ve been running my EA runs. Took me about a mile and a half to settle in and then things were fine. It was obviously more challenging than an easy run but nothing over the top.

Tomorrow is jam packed with stuff, but my 9mi run WILL happen. It’s not optional.

Sunday: 9mi EA. I’m calling today more of a mental training day than anything. A lot of people complaint about treadmill run and how boring it is. This is not the hard part for me. The hard part is that on a bad/hard day that I can just step off and any time and be done. I’m not a few miles from home. I can’t say to myself to just get to the next corner and then we can turn around (and still get the whole run done.) I can just stop and go upstairs. I was very happy when I got to “just 3 more miles.”

14:03 avg pace. More bathroom stops than I wanted. Probably under-fueled: did a caffeinated liquid IV in 16oz of water (pineapple yuzu…yum!!) with a couple swigs every mile. Caramel coffee stroopwaffle (more caffeine) at mile 4ish. I was nodding off while I was putting DD down for her nap, so I wasn’t exactly raring to go when I started my run.

Ankle/calf had some minor spasming toward the end of the run and I’m foam rolling out a nice knot in it as I type this.

non-running related, since i finished it during the first half of my run today: Taika Waititi needs to stop being allowed to write marvel movies. holy cow was Thor L&T like a middle schooler wrote it...feelings are happening, better have some screaming goats or cringey joke now! I also don't like how they tried to make Korg into a Luis-type character (Ant Man movies.)

Yeah, that movie was...weird. Like they decided, "Thor movies are the funny ones!" and then tried WAY too hard. The end was also weird.

Monday: 4mi EB. Done and done. Felt significantly easier than I assumed it was going to. That was a nice surprise. Trying to not stress out about peak week and just take it one day at a time.

Also, weird observation. I feel like I can't inhale as much as I should be able to? Or as much as I want to? But I don't know if I can actually take a deeper breath than I currently do. It's like I'm only breathing into the top half of my lungs or something. I'm probably over thinking it and just fixating at this point, but when I take a big breath to yawn or sigh I just feel like I don't take as big a breath as I want. Just strange. I'm not sick. I don't have any respiratory issues. I'm probably just fixating.

Tuesday: rest....3.5 hours on bleachers at basketball. One of DS2's teammates dropped 42 points on the other team....kid couldn't miss a shot! He works really hard, and it was nice to see it pay off for him.

Wednesday: 5mi M pace. Oof. Spent most of the day grocery shopping and finishing up Christmas/birthday shopping, and didn't eat lunch until nearly 3pm when we got home. There went the idea of running as soon as DS1&2 got home from school. I ended up running this at 7pm and I really didn't wanna. Went through a few different podcasts trying to distract myself (because intervals on a tread are awful) until DH called me, and then I talked to him for about 20min. I somehow managed to hit my pace right on the nose (12:04) for the run so that was nice.

I bought a whole bunch of fabric while I was in town, so hopefully I can keep myself distracted during the taper/when the kids are home for break and knock a few things out. I'm going to sew a circle skirt to go under the tulle on a couple of my dotties so maybe I don't have to wear them quite so high, a pocket "case" for medals, and some rice packs since we can never seem to find any of them. Oh, and I might be hand-embroidering my hat for the full. I realized this morning I don't have a hoop, but I also don't think my hat would fit one because of the shape, so that idea might be on pause now.

DH is planning to costume test this weekend. Should be interesting to see how things go with this cape.

Pocket cases for medals is such a great idea! Is this to protect them during park days post races?

I LOVE my pocket cases for my medals. My mom got me 2 different ones off Etsy for Christmas last year and I use them to take my medals to the parks for pics, just slip them out one by one while I’m waiting in line, and slip them back in after I’m done. 3 rD weekends so far and I haven’t had any kind of damage to any of my medals.

Thursday: 4mi EA. I don’t remember much about this run. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Friday: ended up being my rest day since there were 3 basketball games (DH unexpectedly had to ref the first game because one of the guys thought it was at 5:30 instead of 4:00, and DH said it was awkward because DS2 was in that game, and a bunch of kids he’s coached for years.) Did a lot of seeing, and realized I had forgotten a couple of things. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Saturday: 4mi EA. This run felt like it took for.ev.er. I belated remembered that I needed to eat all of the things before Sunday’s long run, and then (as usual) DD slept horribly. It’s like she knows when I have my long runs and tries to “help” me practice feeling exhausted.

Sunday: 13mi (3hr) EA. I needed a solid, uninterrupted distraction for this, so i found a YouTube video someone did last year when they live-streamed the ‘22 marathon. It’s a 5.5hr video (WDWCouple) and it completely did the trick. Had peanut butter toast around 2hrs before the run, and then a bowl of instant oatmeal about 10min before the run. Huma lemonade at the 1hr mark, and I also did a packet of grape tailwind in a qt of water starting at the 90min mark. I feel shockingly good this evening.

And now the end sprint through Christmas, birthdays, New Years, and leaving for race week.

I feel shockingly good this evening.
I spoke too soon. While I’m definitely nowhere near where I was during Goofy 11 months ago, my legs were very confused as to why we were back on the treadmill today, even if if was just for 3 measly miles!

Monday: 3mi easy. Legs didn’t really wanna for the first 2 miles, but I made them do it anyway. My calves especially were very tight feeling at the beginning. Watched a few more miles of the marathon live stream video I started to yesterday (skipped forward to HS/boardwalk section.)

Tuesday: posting it now. Rest day. Basketball game for DS2. Christmas concert for DS3.

I'm starting to think about various race strategies as we move closer, and I'm so happy I did a race-weekend recap last year because I feel like the ideas I've been thinking of are a bit too optimistic looking at how it all went down last year.

I'm quoting those days so it's closer to race weekend and I don't have to dig for the reference as I try to figure out what's realistic in a couple of weeks.

Saturday: Slightly more race nerves than usual. Woke up about 5x during the night SURE that I had slept through my alarm, forgotten to turn it on, or had shut it off the first time it went off. Little bit of coffee, bowl of oatmeal, and took a half a water bottle with a full packet of tailwind to drink in the start corral. Drove the car to the HH at the resort for DH to retrieve later that morning. I looked around in what ended being the place for the meetup when I got to the start, but I must have been early or something, so I kept wandering through and got into my corral early to get off my feet and try to calm my nerves. At some point I saw The Expert walk past and I was SO HAPPY to see a person that I "knew" so I tracked her down in the crowd and we ended up running most of the race together. I said one of my goals was a dark-sky castle (aka still lit up) pic, but I wasn't sure if I could make it because of how far back we were in the start groups. She agreed to run with me and if we got to a point where one of us wanted to run a different pace from the other that we would just do our own thing. Somewhere around mile 3 or 4 we saw a Miss Piggy with a long blonde ponytail sticking out of the back of a hat and discovered that we had come up on SheHulk! So we ran with her as well until somewhere around Main Street. It cracks me up to look at the mile splits because after we got clear of the masses (mile 1) we ran around 13:00mm and then at mile 6 (where we split up for character/castle pics) it's over 25:00 for that mile. :rolleyes1:rotfl2: WORTH IT! I caught back up to The Expert somewhere around Grand Floridian and we ran the rest of the course together. It seems that our paces matched up pretty well and we were both willing to be flexible in our intervals and just wanted to coast to the finish to save something for Sunday.

Real talk. After this race my feet were killing me. So so so sore. We headed to DS so I could finally do some shopping before the crowds started to peak. We had a lunch reservation for Chef Art Smith's that I was SO EXCITED FOR. But since I didn't eat my snack box IMMEDIATELY after the race, and waited until I got back to the room, I had almost no appetite. I wanted to eat, but I just couldn't. Dinner was pretty much the same. I made myself eat.

My parents are "snow birds" who have a winter home a couple of hours from Orlando, and they drove over to see us the toddler for the afternoon. We hung out at the pool, which helped my feet and legs tremendously, and then it was an attempt at an "early" bedtime (8:30) so I could feel like a person and not a zombie on Sunday.

Massive fail on that.

Sunday: I had intended to get to the meet-up but I was so tired that getting ready took me a lot longer than it should have, and I didn't get out the door until almost 3:00. Because we were changing resorts on this day (rented DVC points and limited availability basically tied our hands on this) the car was mostly loaded, and I didn't want to carry the stroller back up the stairs for DH/DD to use, so I decided to limp walk to the front to catch the race bus. Which was 0.75mi. The sidewalks are well-lit, so I didn't feel nervous or unsafe about the (long) walk on my own, but it was yet another mile on my feet going into what I knew would be a long day. Add another layer of anxiety. Moving can help calm me down, so DURING the walk was better, but once I was on the bus it all started back up. I had intended to do the meet up on this morning, but I felt like I just needed to get into my corral, breathe, k-tape my foot, drink my tailwind concentrate, and try to get my brain straightened out for the day. I stopped at medical and got tylenol for my feet on my way to the corral, and stopped and checked a bag with a sandwich, compression socks, and clean (dry) leggings for post race, should I need them. I also packed my half medal with intentions of going back to that golden mickey statue for a pic with all of my medals at the end, but I didn't have the additional half mile+ in me by the time I finished. The Expert came and met me in the corral a bit before the start and we went back over the plan for the day: attempt 14min/mi -ish pace through the castle, and then just stay in front of the sweep line. We figured we would have around a 30min start on the balloon ladies, and would have "earned" another 20min by the time we got through MK, so a full hour of cushion to make the day as enjoyable as possible, with time to slow down and do any must-have character stops. And then they expedited the start because of the forecasted high temperatures and that initial 30min cushion became more like 15min. We were tracking the pacers from the 7:00 and the updates were VERY delayed coming in, which made us both nervous, but we knew that 12:30pm was around the cutoff for finishing.

We ran 90/30 intervals through the castle (some extra walk breaks for aid stations or when we took fuel) and stayed mostly in the 14-15mm pace through mile 11, and then we experimented a little with inverting that and doing 30/90, which we decided was too long of a walk and did 30/60 for most of the remainder of the race. The Expert lived up to her screen name with all of the tips and tricks for getting through the long, hot miles. DON'T THROW YOUR SPONGES AWAY! I had never seen that specific bit of advice. Keep them for the next water stations and re-wet them. The ice bags felt SO good. And her unwavering enthusiasm and positivity were exactly what I needed. We saw SheHulk on the course again in her Gazelle costume (SO CUTE!) on the way to MK. And we did it! We both finished, and I know that she kept me going through some of those long highway stretches, and hopefully I did the same for her.

Let’s start heat acclimation training!!

Wednesday: 4mi easy. This ended up being run at 8pm. Ugh. What’s sleep?

Thursday: 4mi 3.2mi easy. I started this running a little late, and had to cut it about 10min short to go pick DS2 up from basketball. Just as the winter storm’s first band of snow was starting.

Friday: 5mi M pace. This sucked so much. I was counting the minutes and it made the run very tedious. I’m definitely not imagining the tightness in my lungs/chest when I run faster than easy pace. Probably need to make a dr appointment and see if it’s some sort of sports-induced thing. Wore more layers today for HA training.

We are due to get somewhere around a foot of snow by tomorrow, with a lot of blowing and drifting. That’s just a good excuse to hunker down with some holiday cheer and some movies. 😉

Saturday: off/rest. The mom-guilt got me, so DH and I spent 4 hours in the evening making cookies (snickerdoodles, chocolate crinkles, and jam-gems) and then I also prepped cinnamon rolls to take out of the fridge and bake in the morning. Note to self: in the future, just bake them that night and then warm them up in the morning because they take forever to rise out of the fridge. I also got the underskirt for my Jasmine costume sewed, DH and my medal pouches finished, and fixed DH's magic carpet cape so it follows the rules. And then we watched Elf.

Sunday: 9mi easy. I intended to do this in the afternoon (Christmases tend to be low-key here after the morning present excitement is over) but when I tried to put DD down for her nap I ended up napping too! We played Yahtzee, a ToT themed game of Clue, and DH and the kids played a lot of Mario Kart. A pretty good day.

Monday: 9mi easy. On the treadmill, as usual. I didn't wear ALL of the layers for heat acclimation because I was nervous of how this run would go the day after holiday indulgence. I watched all 2 of Arno's 2020 MW videos, and the beginning bit of WDW Couple's 2022 half marathon video. If actually felt pretty darn good. I have 5 runs that are each 1 hour long remaining until we get on a plane, and I'm so excited (I won't say I'm READY, but excited definitely fits the description.)
