Two summers in a row now. What is going on?
Last year she started vomiting on the plane ride home. We thought it was motion sickness, but no, it was a virus and lasted five days!
This year, same thing. Second last night she felt nauseous all night and then as soon as we got home she started vomiting and has been nauseous for SEVEN days now!!!!!!
I am so so sad :(
Is it the swimming pools? Blizzard Beach? All the restaurants? The fast food?
Please pray she gets better soon :(

Might help but might not - next time around try 'storing up' on vitamin C for a couple weeks beforehand and throughout your vacation. Get a nice large OJ or orange each morning and have her start with that.

I always try to do this before vacations...Not as much worried they'll catch something there but really try to avoid the getting sick the day before we leave scenario.

Good luck and heal quickly little one.

One solid week of nothing but public places plus two confined aircraft rides. To someone very sensitive to contact germs, its a recipe for stomach virus disaster.

I echo upping the Vitamin C. During vacation, in addition to regular normal washing of hands, you may want to hand sanitize as often as possible. She's touching stuff all week on vacation that's been touched by thousands of others.....line guard rails, ride hand bars, tables, chairs, etc.

Up the Vitamin C. We all take vitamins everyday but a few weeks before our trip DH and I both take Emergen-C everyday. DD gets a larger glass of OJ and we also start cooking meals that are loaded with some extra Vitamin C and D.

I would also take special care during bathroom breaks to wash hands extra well and even maybe up the amount of hand washing even if it isnt a restroom break (especially after popular rides). There are thousands of people that touch the same thing all day long.

If you bring a backpack try putting some clorox wipes into the backpack when you go next time to even wipe down tables at QS meals. DH is susceptible to stomach viruses so we do alot of wipe downs (crazy sanitizer mom right here!)

We (the kids and I, not dear dh) don't do dessert/white/cane sugar until the last couple of days of vacation so that we're not sick on vacation. With our poor immune systems, that just means we're sick after vacation, but at least we got to have fun while there :). If I really was adamant about not getting sick, then we'd eliminate all white/cane sugar.

Airports and airplanes are full of germs. Perhaps have her wear a face mask and use lots of hand sanitizer. Just touching the chairs in the airport, airport rails, etc. she could be picking up something. It's hard to keep kids from touching things then their face and mouths. I lived in Asia for over 5 years and it is common to see them wearing the masks while traveling on planes so they do not get sick from other travelers.

1.
With [our] poor immune systems ... .

2. Does she put her fingers in her mouth or in her eyes or nose when you are not looking?

3. Do not touch food with bare fingers.
3a. Use a napkin to pick up food items (requires practice and care to avoid dropping).
3b. Select items that are eaten using fork or spoon as opposed to fingers.

4. Fingernails kept short and without false nails attached, to cut down on the crud that accumulates underneath?

5. Bring rubbing alcohol to go with paper towels to make super powerful hand wipes and table wipes with. (Bottle must be kept upright in the backpack or strolle pouch since liquids have a notorious tendency to leak out the cap.)

We had one stay that oldest dd & dh had pink eye then another the two of them had a stomach virus. Youngest dd and myself typically have astma, allergy, and sinus problems. We look like an OTC & vitamin emporium along w/ some px meds. Hand sanitizer is my friend. Last year we had to go to Walgreens while we were there for Mucinex DM. Picking up Mucinex DM in Florida with a KY license was lengthy. I was waiting for the DEA to bust through the doors and take me to the floor.:rotfl2:

This is why I LOVE THIS BOARD. THANK YOU For all the tips!!!!! NExt year I am going to chase her with a bar of soap the entire trip LOL! And yeah sanitize like crazy. I need to start being more proactive with this. We are very very lax usually so I am upping the crazy sanitizing ante!

Hand washing is much more effective than sanitizing. Wash hands whenever you have the chance, and use hand sanitizer as a back up, when you can't make it to a sink.:)

We sanitize like crazy when at Disney, and (knock on wood), never come home sick. I am always amazed when I watch what other people do while at the parks - a mom tearing apart a pretzel and giving each kid a piece while NONE of them sanitized/washed their hands first. Or a kid running their hands down all of the handrails and then touching his eyes/ears/mouth - just asking to pick up a bug. You have to be proactive with your family's health. When you put thousands of people from all over the world together in a small space, there are bound to be germs/viruses everywhere.

"they say" that drinking grape juice (100%, not cocktail) helps to keep stomach bugs away --- can't hurt to have her drink it while you are there and before, etc --- I was so worried about stomach bugs on our first trip we were all drinking it like crazy, lol. nobody got one, but who knows if that was luck or not. I did get strep while at Disney the first time - but that wasn't a shock b/c i'm very prone to getting it- so I already had an Rx filled and with me just in case!

I will be adding grape juice to my grocery list. There is one going around our community lately. I'm a huge baby if I get a stomach virus. I can handle pain but nausea is pure torture for me.

Someone gets sick on all of our trips too (9 times and counting). It's simply the exposure to new germs she doesn't have immunity for, and running down her body with a different sleep schedule, heat, and a different diet. There is always one of us who comes home with something.
In fact my son got an infection in his appendix and was hospitalized in Orlando when he was 6. Exactly one year later he appeared to have the stomach flu when we checked out, we still made it home and within hours of being home his appendix ruptured and he had Emergency surgery. We spent two weeks in the hospital on I.V. therapy for that.:(

For the run of the mill stomach bugs, colds, sore throats etc it is simply being exposed to so many new viruses/bacteria at once and really can't be avoided. It's just best to protect yourself by not getting run down, eating well and trying to keep to a normal sleep schedule. And of course hand washing.:)

This one is huge. I always have to chuckle a little when people are sure where they picked something up at Disney. You touch thousands of things in a day on vacation that thousands of other people have touched. It's bound to happen at some point.

(Would like to point out my sons appendix issues obviously weren't from picking something up at Disney, but did have everything to do with getting completely worn down).

We have bath and body works hand sanitizes hooked to our belt loops, get plenty of rest, hands away off the face! If all that fails here is a trick my pal who beat cancer a few year back suggested for any type of vomiting. At the first sign of queasy ness take a dose of Dramamine and drink a clear soda like sprite, 7up or Sierra Mist. You will better soon!

We laugh that it just isn't a Disney trip unless one of our kids pukes. Fortunately, it has always been short lived, but we haven't made it through a trip without it in years!

Wow! I was in the 4th grade when mine ruptured. The pain prior to the rupture is the worst I ever had. My 2 c-sections were a piece of cake compared to that.

Well I for one avoid hand sanitizer. It will actually help you pick up bad bacteria. Soap and water is what I use and I avoid touching anything that someone else might have touched. Some things you have to touch but others like ropes, chains, handrails (unless you need it) can be avoided.

Hand sanitizer kills all the bacteria on your hands. Most people think great that's good, but it isn't because what most people don't know is your hands have good bacteria on them that is working to kill the bad. So now by using the hand sanitizer you have killed all the bacteria even the good ones, now anything you touch will most likely have only bad bacteria and now there is nothing to stop them from spreading since you killed all the good bacteria.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your fingers.
