Everest vs MK roller coasters?

I hated the backwards portion too till a friend who works in a hospital, respiratory section, said to scream while the train is going backwards. The backwards portion had made me nauseous. It worked for me. I have no idea why it works, but I love being able to ride it.
Correct. The key is to forcibly exhale (i.e. screaming or yelling). It works on large drops, too. I learned that as a kid, and I went from being afraid of even the smallest drops to heading directly to the biggest coasters I could find.

It looks like you have made your decision, but I did want to chime in. We took our kids (8&5) in August and it was a complete surprise. I booked all the FPs in advance and EE was one of them. We did all of the coasters except RNR and I have to say EE was the favorite of the kiddos. I found it much, much smoother (less jerky) than SM and BTMR. And while I liked the Mine Train, I still found EE more enjoyable. The kids could not stop talking about the Yeti ride!

Have you watched a video of EE just to get a sense? When we surprised our kids, I watched videos of rides I wasn't sure of for them and it did help me out a bit. For what it's worth, my kids love the mountains and like Rockin Roller Coaster although it sometimes gives them both a headache. This last trip was their first time riding Everest and it's now their favorite coaster.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I don't do roller coasters so they all look awful to me! He would be riding with my sister (his aunt.)

No embarrassment necessary. I love roller coasters, but hyperventilate at the thought of a water slide!!

My son does NOT do upside down roller coasters or ToT. He's never done anything more intense than the three mountains at WDW and has, so far, refused to go on California Screamin' at Disney California Adventure. As for single rider lines, we do them all the time. For our family, it's one of the biggest advantages of visiting Disney with an older child. Spending less time in line for us is way more important than sitting next to each other.

Sounds like you are making the right decision about your FP+ for your family. For what it is worth, though, on our last trip EE was my DS's (ages 16 and 13 at the time) and DNieces' (ages 12, 10, and 8 at the time) favorite ride at WDW! They rode it six times in a row during ROL. The line was empty to non-existent. Such a fun memory for all of them! If your son is debating about riding it, my DS just said to tell him that California Screamin' is worse than EE since it goes upside down. He said that EE is just super fast and fun. I will caution you, though, that some riders think they are going upside down when they are going backwards in the dark.

My only advice would be to do it at rope drop. If he loves it (it's our favorite Disney ride), he can probably get in another ride or two before the lines get long.

Thanks for the suggestion. I love RnR coaster but the backwards dip for EE makes me very uncomfortable - I'll give this a shot!

My 13 does not yet know we are going to WDW in January so I can't show him photos or videos of Everest. He does love the three MK "mountains." How do they compare? I would hate to make FP reservations and then have him refuse to ride.
In my opinion, they don't compare. MK coasters are family coasters, fun but pretty tame. Everest is bigger, faster, more intense. That being said, I am a ride chicken, and managed Everest, and even enjoyed it, but it is a much different experience than Big Thunder, or 7DMT.
