Ever get into a situation where something was said to you, and in the moment you're so taken aback, that you can't process a witty comeback? I had a situation when I was just entering the work world. I was the "office runner" (aka the girl who ran around dropping off huge stacks of computer printouts, dumping messages, etc.) I was fairly new. I knew one of the guys had just taken leave because his wife had given birth. So I was running around one day and entered 'Carls" office (he shared with the new dad"Ben") a woman was there with a baby. My first thought was 'wow it's Bens wife!" So I dropped off the stuff with Carl, approached the mom and said "congratulations! are you Bens wife?" She looked at me as if I had three heads and rudely said "who the H*&LL are you?" I backed off, I said I was new.... Carl just sat there. It was odd. Now, I think if I had time to ponder.... I would've looked back at the baby and said "unfortunate, must take after you".
