Ever used Amex points for car Rental?

I am seriously considering booking Avis as it is at the terminal and I can use Amex points. I don't think I'll ever use these points for anything else - as I do not have enough for flights. I will probably still pay something as the rates are outrageious for spring break though, with many code or coupons having expired already, nothing new has surfaced yet for april. Has anyone ever used their Amex points - how easy was it?
Do I need to reserve as an AMEX reward user?

We used amex points for avis a few years ago. We used points to get avis certificates/coupons, which we used like cash when paying for the car.

I looked a couple of months ago and the certificates were still an option on membership rewards.

I have used Avis twice with Membership Rewards. You submit for a voucher through AmEx, and like the above poster said, they send you the certificates, and you use those like cash (no change given though, so make sure you don't get too much!).

I've had no problems, and always got a good rate when using the AWD and coupon code specified on the AmEx site for using the rewards. If you don't have enough points to use them in other ways, rental cars are a great way to go!
