DH and I are going in November with a group, one of whom smokes. He's 45 and he's been smoking since he was about 16.

I'm kinda worried about how he's going to do on this trip. He smokes alot. I don't think I've ever seen him go for an extended period without a cigarette. He knows about the Clean Air Act and the restricted smoking locations available to him,and he seems to think he'll be fine.

But...I've watched friends try to quit smoking and I've seen that it is very difficult to do. I can't imagine my BIL trying to go without cigarettes for a few hours let alone a week! I've suggested that he try using a patch at least on the plane, but he insists that he'll be fine.

Does anyone have any stories about the difficulties of being a smoker in Florida and/or any suggestions that might be helpful to my BIL?

My mother is a very heavy smoker and she came with us in 2004. We drove to WDW (a 12-13 hour drive) and we don't let her smoke in our vehicle, so whenever we made a bathroom stop or stopped to eat, she would get in as many cigarettes as possible in that time. We had stayed at the Dolphin in a non-smoking room and had requested a balcony, so she would smoke outside on the balcony. At the parks, I would say they were pretty accomodating with the designated smoker's spots. When she had to have one, she would find where the nearest spot was on the map and off she would go and come find us after she was through. We had warned here before we left that there were designated spots and it was against the rules to smoke anywhere else other than those spots. She did fine! :thumbsup2

HTH! :goodvibes

As a former pack a day smoker I can teel you that he will be fine....I have flown across country non-stop and not had an issue, chew gum...eat mints and you deal with it!

It will be fine. Dh is a smoker, there are plenty of designated smoking areas.

I agree. We traveled with a smoker last year. We stayed at OKW so they smoked on the balcony and then found the designated areas inside the parks. We had not trouble at all.

Just be VERY VERY CLEAR about this. I thought I had been, but I went with someone who kept lighting up everytime she saw a trashcan - which is everywhere. I'd really had it by the end of the trip. After correcting her a dozen times I would just walk away when she did it. I did not want people to know I was with such an inconsiderate person.

There are smokers and there are militant smokers (the minority thank goodness) who feel they can do what ever they can get away with.

Thank you for all of your comments! I feel a lot better about this!

Do you guys know of any websites that indicate where the smoking areas are? If I can pass that info along to BIL I'll feel like I've done what I can to make sure he is comfortable. (This is his FIRST trip ever to the world so DH and I are acting as his tour guides.) pixiedust:

I wouldn't worry about it, your friend has been smoking a long time & if he says he will be fine, he will be... I smoke too and you would't believe the self-control we can display when we are pre-occupied with something else :thumbsup2 FYI when you get the maps at each park the maps clearly show where :smokin: is allowed, I found the smoking areas were adequate and placed where I wasn't stressed having to go a long period...the worst experience I must say is at MGM near Tower of Terror filthy, overflowing ashtray/containers whenever I have been there..honestly I'm glad there is a smoking policy at WDW, I use to get crazy with the inconsiderate smokers holding their cigarettes at child face levels
