Ever trade for non-Disney vacations?

My wife and I are considering DVC. We have two children and the oldest is already board riding the same rides every trip (we are annual passholders and go 2-4 times per year). We think when the younger gets board with Disney, we'll go less frequently and try other vacation destinations. Of course we'd love to go on the African Safari one day.

My question is this: if you trade your points for other vacations, do you get the same quality destination as the Disney resorts?

Also, how is a trade handled in terms of points? How many points for a week in a nice location over Spring Break?

DW and I traded out to Va. Beach over the labor day holiday two years ago. The trade was painless, just called MS told them where we wanted to stay and had a point cost in about 5 minutes.

You'll hear varying degrees of satisfaction with the trades. Some are on par with DVC, some not quite. Most are considered better than avaerage resorts. Dean can give you much more info the resorts available for trade as he seems to own just about everywhere.

Disney has now come out with a standardized point chart for II exchanges based on season and size of accommodations. You should be able to find it on the member website.
