Ever switch from hard lenses to soft lenses?

I have worn gas-permeable or hard contact lenses for 38 years. I want to switch to soft lenses, since my insurance will pay for those. I'll need to NOT wear my contact lenses for a month, so that my cornea can return to "normal", so that I can be fitted for soft lenses. Has anyone here done this? Will a month really be enough time?

I did! I was in gas perms for probably 20-25 years then switched to soft. I only had to go lens free for 2 weeks, so a month should be plenty of time. It was a lot easier to switch than I had expected.

I was told that with the extent of my near-sightedness, that hard lenses would give me better vision than soft. So I have had hard lenses for 33 years.

I did this a few years ago (wore RGP for 18 years) and they gave me a trial pair of soft to wear for a week before they placed the order. The transition was very smooth and I didn't have to wear my glasses. Be prepared, you will notice a difference in how you see with the soft.

I am VERY far sighted (+6) and have worn hard lenses for about 29 years now. I'd love to switch from hard to soft, but my doctor said I'd really notice a big differnence in the vision correction between hard & soft. He also said that some people who wear hard lenses simply can't transition to soft :(

Good luck....hope you're one of the ones who can!

My best friend switched from Hard Lenses to Soft. Her eyes were constantly drying out when she had the hard ones. She was always putting drops in her eyes. Now that she has switched, I never see her reaching for that bottle of drops!

Hard lenses really press against the eye ball, so yes, you need to not wear them for a while so the eyes can return to a normal shape before being fitted to soft lenses. When I and & ex-Bf each got Lasik eye surgery, we both had to stop wearing soft lenses completely for a month, for the same reason.

You will love soft lenses. The difference in the feel as you wear them is like night & day. :cool1: Unless your eye sight is so bad that you really can not wear soft lenses, you will wonder why you didn't make the switch earlier.

I could never wear gas-permeables, even though they hadn't made soft lenses in my prescription for the longest time. They simply hurt too much. So my doctor fitted me for whatever soft lenses she could & I wore them anyway and lived with less than perfect vision. :cloud9:

I did years ago, back when hard lenses were made out of hard plastic. I could see a little better with my hard lenses, but the pain from the corneal abrasions I got from them made seeing a little worse with soft lenses well worth it. I had to keep my lenses out for a month too.
