I have been planning to bring my own snorkle gear and rent for DD10, but in an effort to keep the suitcase from being overstuffed and overweight.....I wonder if I could manage without the fins?

Is it very far out to the snorkle area at the family beach?

Ever tried it?

Personally, I HATE fins and never use them. The snorkel area is pretty large, but I don't think it's a problem without fins, especially if you have a flotation vest (which they require).

I did a little of both. At Blue Lagoon, I wore my water shoes because you had to walk over the rocks and "stuff". Of course it is difficult to walk in fins so that is why I did it without.

At CC, I used them once and then later without. I went all the way out and found it very tiring on the way back without the fins. It may have been the fact that this was my first time snorkeling and I didn't have my "summer swimming legs yet".

I'll probably pack them again next trip just so I have them.

The difference between swimming with fins and swimming without fins is like the difference between a bicycle and a motorcycle. You need so much less effort to swim with fins.

Depending on the tide, It can be a good swimming distance to get to where the interesting stuff to see is. I did not realize how far out I had gone, until I started to swim back. I am in decent shape physically, but it was a pretty good workout without fins! My DD12 had no problem without the fins, But she had just finished her cross country season. So it is possble to go without fins, but if you can manage to bring them, I would.
