My 5-yo DD was dxd with strep throat yesterday. AFter 24 hours of the antibiotics, you are no longer contagious. But even so, my 6-yo DD has been exposed along with me and DH....

The incubation period is 24 to 36 hours, so theoretically if the rest of us will get it, it should start showing up tomorrow. But you never truly know how one will react and the time length for any symptoms...

BUT......just in case, has anyone ever needed a doc at WDW? We go to the coast every year and sure enough, we have had to go to the doc there... Just want to be prepared for our trip this weekend.

We leave Saturday....so SURELY no one would get symptoms that far away, would you think?

TIA

There are a few walk-in clinics just outside of DTD. One is across the street from Jungle Jims. You'll find them listed in the yellow pages in your hotel, and we called a few to check the wait times and select the "best" one. Sorry, I don't remember the name, but it really wasn't a hassle. If you need meds, there are lot of pharmacies nearby too. I had pink eye & a sinus infection (yuck!)a couple years ago and was able to get drops and antibiotics quickly.

I hope you won't need to visit, but it's nice to know they're there AND competent! (At least mine was!)

I had to go to the Dr. when at WDW. We asked at the front desk where the nearest place was. I cant remember the name of it We were seen pretty quickly and given a prescription, I think they even filled it at the office there.

Is there any way the Dr will give you a prescription for the other child? If you let them know you are going and might be in a bind??

I havent used one, but my aunt did. She said she was too sick to leave the room and he came right to the Poly. They asked at the front desk about it. She said he came with a giant black suitcase like bag filled with every medicine imaginable. She said it was not cheap , like $165 I think. I don't know if that covered her medication. Our friends used the centra care option offsite. Their little dd had an ear infection. They had their own van so it was not a problem going there, but the whole process took them 6 hours and ruined the day for them. Watch some of those antibiotics because you need to limit the sun exposure. Good luck and hope you enjoy your trip.

When we went a couple of years ago, my son (who was 3 at the time) developed bronchitis. We were eating dinner at the Crystal Palace when we noticed he really wasn't feeling well and had a bad fever. The waiter immediately arranged for my wife and son to be taken to a clinic for diagnosis and subsequently to a pharmacy for the antibiotics. They couldn't have been any more wonderful.

We had to call a doctor on our last trip in May. I was not about to look for a clinic and wait hours in line! I called the front desk at the Poly who connected me with an oncall doctor that only does the resorts. They are not affiliated with WDW but do all their doctoring there and other Orlando resorts. I made an appointment for 2 hours later and the nicest doctor showed up at our room. He was so nice and patient with DD, who was not about to let some stranger look at her! He stayed for about an hour talking to her and getting her to feel at ease about the whole thing. He was not allowed to do a strep test in the room but did say she had all the symptoms of strep. I had dealt with this plenty of times with DS many years ago and felt it was strep also. If I wanted a definite answer I could have taken her to a clinic but I trusted his judgement. He ordered antibiotics delivered to the resort which came a couple hours later. His visit was $165 which was worth every penny. It was nice that DD could relax and lay in bed until the doctor showed up as opposed to dragging her around looking for the clinic and then waiting there and then going to find a pharmacy. The doctor did say at that time there was a 3 hour wait at the clinic just in case I wanted to take her there. No thanks! I was relieved that this was so easy. I was always afraid if someone got sick then it would be difficult to find a clinic and so on. Our insurance didn't cover this out of area visit but DH gets his pretax medical $$$ taken out of his paycheck and that covered it. If I were you I would ask your ped to give you a script for the antibiotics before you go. That way if DD gets sick you are pretty sure what it is and only have to get the script filled. I rarely caught strep from my kids but you could also get him to write you all scripts just in case. My ped has done that before for my whole family before leaving on a trip when DS had strep. This would avoid a trip from the doctor and save you alot of money.:goodvibes

We had to call a Dr for DS (then 14 months), who had ran a fever for 2 days and was becoming letharigc. I called Centra Care to make an appointment & I was planning on going to them. The operator told me they could send a dr to our room, which we chose to do. The bill was $150 (this was about 1.5 years ago). The Dr was a young woman, very nice, spent quite a bit of time with us. Very good experience.

skiwee1 & cinjam,

How did you pay for the doctor's visit? Was it billed to the room? Did you pay the doctor directly--if so, how--by cc, check, cash? We don't take much cash by rule, and never the checkbook, when we go to WDW so would like the info for future reference.:D

Thanks in advance.

I paid the doctor directly by CC. I don't know if they take checks or not. We don't bring the checkbook and just a little cash. We always use the CC.

We paid by check. We usually take a few checks with us and a little bit of cash. They did accept credit cards. If they insisted on cash, my back up plan was the ATM machine in the hotel.

Wish I had known about the on call doctor coming to the room!!

My son came down with a really bad fever and was getting lethargic as well. We took him to one of the small urgent care places mentioned and had a horrible experience!!!
Now let me say my son was not very congested at all, just a little runny nose. They looked at him and immediatley deceided that he needed a chest xray. That took forever and was a horrible expereince..these people had NO experience dealing with kids. Then they said he needed a breathing treatment...well he has never had one of these, he had never had a history of breathing difficulties. He was crying and they were just like "what is his problem..hasnt he had one of these before". Umm NO!! I KNEW he did not have anything wrong with his lungs...he wasnt coughing or sound like he had any fluid in his lungs. So they gave him antibiotics for his lung congestion. And wanted him to stay for observation. Well we had been there like 5 hours to this point and I said forget it!! I had to sign a paper saying it was against the "doctors" orders. We went home the next day and staright to his Pediatrician from the airport and he had a DOUBLE ear infection...really bad. The "doctors" in florida completely missed that little fact. Can you imagine how he must have felt on that plane ride!!! Oh it still makes me mad 2 years later. His doctor here said that he had NO fluid in his lungs what so ever!!!

Sorry for the long post!!! Guess I needed to vent! LOL!!
I would say call the dr. to your room!!! In my experience those urgent care places are not well trained in dealing with children!!!
We leave in 10 days...and I am just praying non of us gets sick!!!

We've been to Centra Care at least three or four times in our trips to WDW. I got the flu one time and needed some meds. My husband had a killer ear infection. And I don't remember the others. They took our insurance (BCBS) and we only paid the co-pay. They were very competent and we got the RX filled right at their office.

My only experience with Dr. in WDW has been at local emergency room (suffered a miscarriage - was not the happiest place on earth that year). However, my pediatrician is always more than willing to cover us with another script if we are getting ready to go out of town and there is a chance sibling with come down with same malady.

I then call grown-up Dr. and ask for same. We have never been told no. I don't fill them until I need to, but the Walgreens fairly close to DTD has us all in their nation-wide computer.:)

Okay, we had an...an....shall we say interesting trip to WDW. My brother ruptured both ear drums, broke out with chicken pocks and mom and I had a lung problem that we were on anti's for BUT anyway....the doctors office my brother went to was $100.00 for the office visit. They came and picked him and mom up at EPCOT and returned him to EPCOT. They even dropped off the drugs at the hotel room for us! Just go to the nurses station and they will make contact for ya.

We (family of 9) visited Magic Kingdom in Oct 2001 and my 4 yr old nephew quickly became miserable with an ear infection. We took him to first aid and they arranged for a van to transport him and his parents to a hospital. He was treated, rec'd a prescription and they were returned to the park within a few hours. We were blown away by the assistance provided. There was no charge for the van just the normal costs for the doctor and medication. The first aid staff said they provided the same service for resort and day guests. We stayed off-site in a rental vacation home.
