Have you ever FOUND anything interesting hidden in your house?

I just have this strange, gut feeling that something is hidden somewhere in our attic, or in the walls, or in the basement. Apparently the first owner was way out there.

Yesterday, we were digging out an area to plant a flower garden, and DH came upon a rusted Matchbox car. The funny thing is, nobody who ever lived in this house ever had kids.

I found cold medicine hidden all over in my drop ceilings. The previous owner had a "problem"

We bought a 1930's house in the late '90s and fixed it up. At some point while we lived there, I found this weird old medal up on a high shelf I was painting. It was old and had a swastika and some writing on it. I can't remember what the writing said or even what language it was in. I pondered what to do with it, but in the end I threw it away because it just creeped me out. I didn't care if was valuable or not - I didn't want to give any honor to it.

Yeah, that is just creepy. Probably was worth some money, though, if it was real Nazi stuff. Of course, I wouldn't want to profit from that either.

When I moved into m old house, my dad was looking around the attic (you had to open the ceiling and go up on a ladder) and found a box of old pictures and a set of false teeth!!!!

I threw away the teeth (ewwwwwwww) but I still have the pictures. The woman who lived in the house before me (the orginal owner) was married, no children, and died in a nursing home. I'm sure at one time those pictures meant something to her (along with the teeth!) and I couldn't bear the throw them away. I imagine one day my kids will find them and wonder who they are!:lmao:

The house we currently live in has "sheriff sale" signs from the early 1900's!

Our home inspector found a buried oil tank.........the house had an above ground one too. We had the 'owners' pay to have the buried treasure removed :thumbsup2

Nothing real cool. I found an old newspaper from the 50's. It was fun to read. Loved seeing how cheap everything was.

Remember that one thread about someone finding an old gun safe?

We were digging in the backyard right after I bought this house and my SO hit something with the shovel. It ripped the bag open and there were bones & a small dog collar. I felt SO bad. We covered it back up and put a piece of flagstone over it so it wouldn't be disturbed again. :(

I had to sell my mother's house 4 years ago, and she had a buried oil tank, as did all the houses in the neighborhood when they were built (37 years ago). But to sell the house, I had to have an above ground one installed. The underground one was tested for leaking and drained, but didn't have to be dug up, thankfully, because that would've been another big expense.

Never found anything weird in our house. But when I was cleaning out my mother's house to sell, I found in a night table in her room one of those popsicle stick boxes (like you'd make at camp) with painted shells adorning the top...and bullets inside. Mom doesn't remember the story behind that. Must've been a rough camp.

Our house is new...so the only interesting things hidden are by my 3 yr old :lmao:.

But seriously...going thru my great grandma's house when she died was interesting. For starters, we found quite a few glass jugs with moonshine hidden in her basement :scared1::laughing:. I'm sure it had to be toxic after being there for 50+ yrs.

The only thing I ever found in my house just after I moved in was a Coke can sitting on my kitchen counter (still somewhat cool) that wasn't there when I left that morning. :scared1:

I then found a small window that was unlocked and had no screen.

The next thing I found was a security system.

Safe Watch was the BEST!!:rotfl2:

Honestly, our house is about 20 years old. Nothing exciting in it. The original owner died in a nursing home and his son did a good job of cleaning everything out. I WISH there was something cool!!

My grandma's house is a different story...: my grandpa was dying and his last words were "check the rafters of the basement..". We brushed it off as just a confused sick man's last words (no one ever went in the basement, ever). A week later my mom and I were cleaning the basement, checked the rafters and found thousands of dollars and a Japanese officer's sword from a war my grandpa served in!! It was pretty exciting. My grandparents didn't get along and it looks like he was trying to hide all his money from her.. They were both nuts. The sword, however, is very very cool.

No, but if in the future someone looks in our old, unused cistern, they will find a time capsule.

A couple years ago we replaced our wooden back porch. Underneath it was an old cistern. The new porch now totally covers it. But before we covered it, we put in a current newspaper, family photos, and a typed letter describing my family.

in ever renovation i leave a bottle with a note and some pics

When my friend was renovating her house (it was an old farmhouse, now part of a subdivision), they found an old leather baby shoe in the wall. We thought that maybe a baby had died and someone put the shoe there as a memorial or something.

Several years later, we went on a historical tour. We live in an area with a large Mennonite population, and the tour guide was telling us about many of the Mennonite traditions. One was to put a baby's shoe in the wall of a house when a newly-married couple moved in - they believed this would ensure the marriage would be fruitful. We were so excited to have found out why the shoe was in my friend's wall, but we also thought it was hilarious - she has five kids! So it certainly seems to work!!

I grew up in a house that was built in the early 1700's. My brother and I used to dig in the basement for old bottles to sell. (I guess they used to bury their trash???) Anyway, while digging we found a leg bone (knee cap, lower leg and foot). After showing my dad, he didn't allow us to dig in the basement anymore. Not sure what he did with it.

Scary, Barb! I'm glad to see you posting. I hadn't "seen" you in quite a while and was hoping everything was ok.

:scared1: Wouldn't that be a time to call the police?
