...As someone mentioned about wages being garnished - I'm surprised the "loan people" didn't go after the granddaughter at work - or did they??????

In my case, the other person also had a judgement against them, but was unemployed, so I ended up paying. Banks go after everyone that they can to get paid. If she has a job and they know about it, they will go after her. They will get a judgement and garnish her wages. But they will also go after your grandmother, assuming she has money/income that they can attach.

I see what you're saying but granddaughter will not return any phone calls - she will not talk to grandmother. Getting $ from this kids mom would be like getting $ from a rock - it's just not gonna happen - she has no money.

Well in this case, I would hope the extended family would forward any gifts the girl should receive in the form of money to the grandma as payment for her debt. I don't think she will have any recourse, unless she legally not able to sign something like this or unless the signature was forged. I'm sorry your MIL is being taken advantage of like, it is a shame.

Are there any other family besides you? How much money are we talking about?

Maybe you can take up a collection among the extended family for the grandma?

I would certainly do my best to plaster the place where the GD works with the loan people.

I wonder what her place of work would think of her if they knew she was stiffing her grandma on a fixed income?
