To answer your first question, our one and only visit to Cali Grill was very disappointing...
The appetizer was good, the salad was good, but we did not like the food at all (just not our style). But the service was mediocre at best (and it was our wedding dinner, and yes, they knew). Our waiter, while helpful, seemed put off because we didn't know what many of the menu selections really were (some of the more "extravagant" stuff). I asked for two salads, but only got one (not a big enough deal to say anything about, but he could have been more attentive), he only "checked" on us once and didn't offer to refill our drinks or anything. I've had better service for less $$$.
That said, there are many folks who consider the Cali Grill to be the "be all-end all" of a WDW visit, and I envy those folks. I would love to have such an experience at WDW, but I'm still looking for that place!
Unfortunately, I can't really recommend an alternative 'cause we just didn't get to try many places.
