I just finally finished up our taxes and we had some unusual stuff this past year and that always makes me nervous. So I was thinking, I don't think I personally know anyone who's been audited by the IRS. Have you? Not a business, but a personal return.

I was audited back in 2002. Ugh...

My sister works for the IRS and told me what to expect. I had all of my info and it actually turned out to be nowhere as bad as I thought it would be. I am doing my taxes as we speak and I'm dotting every I and crossing every T because I know what they look for now!

Not me, but a cousin of mine had her insurance agency audited by the Feds. Was not bad and the Feds owed her more money when it was done.

My dad was audited for 12yrs off and on. Why? Because he would constantly file extension after extension every single yr.

Of course he was fined to death and wages were garnished and all that jazz.

This yr he filed already. Breath a sigh of relief.

So, share the info so the rest of us avoid audits. LOL

I was once. I have a HSA healthcare plan through work
& I noted it wrong (not sure now what was wrong). I contacted a CPA, gave them the info, then they sent a letter to the IRS on my behalf, amending the return & explaining the mistake. It sucked getting that letter but it was a pretty quick fix.

I was randomly audited two years ago. I collected all the paperwork my accountant asked for and she represented me. About 6 weeks later I got a letter that no changes would be made (ie all was fine with my original return.) It was easy for me because I had an accountant. I would never dream of doing my own taxes!

In about 40 years of tax preparation I've only had about ten clients audited, and never my own return. I even had some clients that I was sure would be audited who were not. And I think that everyone who had been audited had a Schedule C (self-employed business income).

Mike, CPA Retired (but still doing taxes)

Reminds me of years ago when I was managing an apartment complex and some of the tenants were eligible for reduced rate through a government program. I had to roll my eyes at a few of the applications from people who were "self-employed" and their income, or rather lack of income.

We were audited a couple of years ago. We just supplied the back up documentation the IRS requested and then got a letter about 6 weeks later that everything was fine.

I was audited for my 2007 return, and I am STILL fighting the IRS. My daughter had a dental implant, and I paid for it with CareCredit, which is a credit card for medical expenses (I like it because if you pay within the term, it's same as cash). The IRS denied the deduction, because they said CareCredit is health/dental insurance that paid the bills. At least 4 times in the past 18 months, I have provided documentation from CareCredit and letters and ledgers from the dentist and oral surgeon that I paid for the procedures with personal check and CareCredit and not health/dental insurance. I receive a notice every 60-90 days stating that my appeal is still under review. Every time I call the IRS, I get a friendly representative who assures me that it will be cleared up soon, and several have told me that they use CareCredit themselves and know what it is.

How can they not understand something so simple?:sad2:
