EU unhappy with US data requests

I found this article on the BBC website

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5028918.stm

As the article states they are confident a solution will be found. But what struck me was that the US request 34 pieces of info for each passenger. Not having travelled to US since last August I just wondered if passengers now needed to fill in a questionaire before flying.......34 pieces of info - I'm sure I'm not that interesting??!! (name, age, address, shoe size, favourite colour.....)

I hope they do find a solution as the last thing everyone needs is the US starting a stand off against this, i am in full agreement with supplying the information but unfortunately the muppets in Brusssels had no right to make this decision as this para states:

"It said the EU Data Protection Directive, on which the Council of the European Union and the European Commission based their actions did not apply to data collected for security purposes."

So this was effectively a mistake, they should and i hope sort things.

Actually, I'm with the EU on this one. Can anyone tell me how terrorism is prevented by the US Government knowing my credit card number? This is one of the 34 pieces of data they have to give...

Yep, I too would like to know why they have to have details of my credit card and yet I believe they are NOT allowed to query race, colour or religion as this would be a breach of human rights!
I just fear that in these days of increasingly sophisticated hackers, it's only a matter of time before all these details are accessed illegally. I haven't been back to the USA for about 2 years, and won't be going back in the foreseeable future, and yet they will keep my details on file for a futher year and a half. Mind you it's better than the 50 years they wanted to keep details on file.

Still, it must all work as they managed to return Cat Stevens to the UK without setting foot on US soil and yet now they have granted him a multi trip visa...at their own instigation but not an apology to be seen.
