Etiquette for Real Estate Agents.

My problem would be I think your electric bill would be high if they leave your lights on all day

In the case of the vacated homes--I can only assume that someone went and turned them on.

I would find it disrespectful to change the condition of the home without permission (Which you will be providing)--but just b/c you feel it is okay to shut off all the lights, it doesn't mean you are necessarily being respectful unless you are aware of the showing schedule and had permission.

Amen.

Where I am selling its a buyers market. Where I am looking its a buyers market. That doesn't obviate the need to be respectful of someone else's home. I always remove my shoes at the door and I ask if we should turn off the lights. Its intrusive enough to walk through someone's home, open the closets, etc. I certainly don't wish to contribute more stress onto the seller. At least three homes I have seen have been vacated. No one is living there but someone is paying the electric bill. It just seems considerate to me to consider that.

They are. They're leaving your house exactly as you left it.

Unless the agent showing the home is the listing agent, he/she does not have access to the showing schedule for your home. That schedule is kept with the listing agent's office.

As a PP said, if this totally insignifcant thing is bothering you two days into listing your house int hismarket, then I wish you well. You're in for a long frustrating process.

If Jude wasn't so sick, I don't think any of this would bother me. His illness is really a priority for me, and unfortunately "real estate" on either end has become an annoyance when a few weeks ago, it was fun. It was fun getting ready and looking. Now its a distraction. Jude isn't going to get better and I think once I get to the other side of this situation, I will be able to focus on the house. I am not anxious for that day to come however.

We are just as energy frugal as the next guy (and more than some) and use LED bulbs in our house and turn off the lights as we leave rooms and unplug the coffee maker (etc) when not using. That said, when we showed our house for sale, we left all the lights on (and a stereo playing classical music) and expected it to be that way when we got home. No one wants a potential customer to walk into a dark house and you never know when a showing might occur.

I expect the house to be left the same way as I left it.
Our last showing, my back door was left unlocked!! I was not happy about that one.

Bless your heart. You do have a lot going on right now and selling a house is very stressful. Just try not to get so worked up over small things. Easier said than done sometimes.

Thank you!

I can't even imagine. It surely must be stressful.

The fact that you haven't purchased a home in the new area seems to be a stressful thing for you. If it is such a buyers market there, I would think you would be able to find a good house at a cheap price quickly. This would alleviate some of your stress, which given what you are going through with Jude, would probably help you right now.

Make sure your agent communicates with all the other agents that show your home to turn off your lights. That will solve that problem. But you really need to change your habit of walking into other people's homes and turning their lights off without their permission. It's quite rude and inconsiderate to not leave a home in the same condition it was in when you arrived.

As a buyer we left the house as it was when we entered. If the lights were on they were on when we left, if the doors were open they were open when we left (bedroom and bathroom obviously lol), honestly if it worries you that much to have the lights on you need to replace your fixtures/bulbs.

I have energy efficient lights where it is appropriate. That said, when I spoke with the agent today, I asked what the policy is regarding lights. She said that they request that the lights be turned on by the homeowner before leaving the house, and that the agent showing the house turns them off. I told her that it happened the first day but not the second. Today, I returned and the lights were off.
