ethnic restaurants

I have been to Korean places in NYC and here where I live. I like them because you have a little hibatchi at your table and get to grill your own meats.

Actually, I've only had Chinese food up here a couple of times. It was very good, but now I'm hooked on the Vietnamese food.

Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Greek.

There's only one Greek place in our area and although it is very nice it's kind of expensive, IMO. I thought with all the hoopla with Big Fat Greek Wedding a couple more places would open.

a friend of mine from college lives in Arlington. his parents live in Queens, NY, which has a huge Chinatown in Flushing. he always complained about the Chinese food in the District, never thought it was as good as what he could get in NY.

If he likes Vietnamese food, tell him to try Nam Viet in Alexandria. It's on Mt. Vernon Avenue at Russell Road, and it is excellent.

yep, i'd say your friends assessment was accurate. strangely enough, we could get better chinese than anything i've found here in my small upstate new york town. i don't know why, we certainly have a large enough chinese population and we have a chinatown (complete with arch). maybe i just haven't gone to the right places. but i have lived here for 8 years and have never found a chinese restaurant that was imho more than average. many trips to san francisco have probably spoiled me. ;)

nam viet is excellent, to second brenda's recommendation. they also have a restaurant in dc in cleveland park.

dc does have a lot of really good asian food (i've been to good japanese and thai places as well as nam viet) just not good chinese that i've found, anyways.

and as for lebanese - YUM!!!! anyone who comes to dc should go to the lebanese taverna. my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

sigh. that felafel I had for lunch seems like it a soooo long ago....

amybe southwest wraps from Baja Grill for dinner tonight?

We don't like spicey food, so that limits us a lot in terms of where we go. There are plenty of Indian, etc. restaurants around, but I can never remember which type is less spicy (an Indian co-worker) told me once.

We do like Italian, Mexican, German, Greek (gyros), Chinese, Japanese (sushi), and I like Cuban. I've never been able to get DH to go to the Cuban restaurant though; I think he'd like it.

I used to go to this really good Brazilian place on 46th street -- wonder if it's still there? I used to get a steak with a side of black beans and rice...

yes, I am obsessing over food today, thanks for noticing. :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

When I worked over near Capitol Hill, I used to LOVE the Banana Cafe for Cuban. It's definately a lot like "mexican" and you can get things like tacos etc, but I LOVED the cuban specialities. My favorite lunchtime thing was the carnitas sandwich (which they were out of about half the time) but the dinner menu is really varied and wonderful. Yum! It's really close to the eastern market metro stop, though I guess there are a whole bunch of cuban restaurants in DC besides that one.

The BEST way to experience any ethnic food is with someone of that ethnicity. I have a rule when I go out to eat something I haven't tried before... I do NOT want to know what is in it until after I've tried it. I've found out that I like a lot of things that I didn't think I'd like based on what they actually were. Sometimes I'd rather just not know. :)

I don't know whether it's "ethnic" or not but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jewish deli - and we didn't have any in NH and it wasn't very good in Boston. I loved it in CHicago and in Cleveland and to some extent in Los Angeles, but even Gourmet magazine agrees - good corned beef has to be FAT and it's not in LA. At the deli my sister took me to - Toojay (they have several locations around Florida) they even had real hard salami - which I am always sure I will break my teeth on. My sister still refers to deli as "junk" stemming from the time when I said "Daddy, what do you call that stuff I like so much" and he replied "junk." Unless you have had the real thing, the stuff they sell in supermarkets and psuedo delis doesn't come close.

There is a very good Cuban restaurant in Celebration - also Tampa called Columbia.

Italian, Greek, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamise, Mexican, Cuban, Brazilian, Polynesian, African.

Guess I just like to eat??? :p
