Hello all!
I have used the free internet at the villas a few times now and hate the short little ethernet cord. I like to lay down and surf :surfweb: I wanted to pick up a longer ethernet cord before the next trip. Is there any certain kind to get? I keep seeing them with different CAT numbers and whatnot. Are they all the same or do I have to get a specific one to do my surfing away from home? :3dglasses Thank you!! :thumbsup2

If you could find one cheap enough, you might consider a travel router. In simple terms a travel router would allow you to convert the network cable into a WiFi connection.

Since no one is at home to use it, I just brought my regular wireless router.

That's what I did last month. It was really simple, unplug it from the modem and the outlet (bring the wires), throw it in the suitcase. When I got to BWV, I hooked up their cable to it and it picked up my laptop right away (since it was already programmed to it). My friend fired up her laptop, found my signal, I gave her the password and she was on.

I took my router, too, in December, and it worked like a charm. Couldn't have been simpler . . . and I'm no techie. In other words, if I can do it, anyone can. :rolleyes1

This describes me, too, LOL.

Loved being able to use my netbook anywhere in the 1 bedroom. Only the router had to stay at the desk, LOL.

We keep a router in our Owners Locker so that we don't have to remember to bring it with us each trip. It really is convenient being able to use the laptop anywhere in the room. On our last stay at OKW my DH had to take care of some things for work during our stay. OKW has that nice big table on the balcony so he camped out there for a couple of hours with his laptop. If you have to work on vacation, that's a great place to do it!

Ditto here!

We brought the Dlink travel router last week and we had three laptops running off of it all over our THV.

We took a router and a cisco WAP so we had two laptops and an itouch running along with Livio Radio which played our pandora Music. We also included a voice over ip box so we had Columbus, Ohio dial tone there as well.

First, I'm on board with everyone recommending just bringing a router. You can probably get one for less than $30 shipped if you check dealnews or your favorite deal site.

That said, standard CAT 5 cable should work just fine. CAT 5e, CAT 6, etc. cables will also work, but generally cost more. They use RJ45 connectors, which are an 8 conductor version of the RJ11/RJ44 6 conductor connectors that connect your phone to the wall.

If you're traveling with a long cable, you might also get a female-female connector that allows you to plug 2 cables into each other - if you ever find that the cable is non-removable from the wall, you can still use your cable as an extension cord.

You're allowed 328 feet, but that includes what's in the wall, so you probably don't want to get too carried away with cable length; just pick what you need and it will probably work fine.

I take my Dlink with me everywhere I travel. I am using it right now. The hotel has free wired Internet. With the router, I can use my laptop anywhere in the room and I am not wired to the desk with a short cord. And if you have more than one laptop you can all be on at the same time.

The router and power cord are very small.

And once you have it set up, you just plug it in and go, no matter what hotel you are at. Just remember to do one computer first and go on to the web browser to accept all the hotel sign-on and terms/conditions, etc. You need to do that every 24 hours at a DVC resort.

I am really, really, really ignorant. Forgive this stupid question please. 3 members of our family have itouches, but no laptops. Since I have no idea how any of this works, if we bring our router from home, plug it into the cable in the villa, will that work? Even with no computer to plug it into? (See, told you I was ignorant!)

I honestly have no idea. For my laptop I was required to enter a code, after I called tech support, on a web page that came up. If you can enter data via an iTouch (as you can tell I have no iTouch) then it may work.

Almost any cable called "ethernet" will work. They are nowadays at least CAT5, and that's all you really need.

I usually have a cord in my laptop bag that is a better length than what they supply, mainly because I have to use it for work on occasion.

I don't bring my home router, mainly because I've got a rather custom network :) But I'm thinking of getting a travel router for the future just for flexibility of using it in whatever room I want to, not where the jack is...
