What would happen if the expiration date on an ESTA fell on a date you were still in the US ? Does your ESTA have to be valid for the entire stay up until you arrive back in the UK or just the date of entry to the US ?

I have not booked yet but wondered how I would stand if our dates overlapped the ESTA expiration date.

Thanks in advance

As far as I'm aware, your ETSA just has to be valid for the day you travel because it's only an authorization to land in the US, it isn't the right to enter the US. That is a determination that is made by the immigration officer on the day.

It's for entry INTO the states rather than leave to remain, so it's fine as long as its valid until midnight on the day you enter. :)

As said it only needs to be valid for the day you enter, only time it is any different is if you leave and re-enter part way thru your trip, like going on a cruise, when you get back to the US your ESTA needs to be valid that day also.

As others have said it is for entry only. Ours expired on 29th August last year, half way through our trip and we had no issues.

Thanks for the replies folks. I should be fine with the ones I have for my next trip.

Make sure it is valid for a couple of days after you enter the US, only thinking that if your flight were to be delayed at all, you wouldn't want your ESTA to have expired.
