So my Dh bought a dog on Tuesday night. It's and Eskimo Spitz. He's a little over two months old. He saw it in the pet shop and just fell in love with it. I know you shouldn't purchase dogs from pet stores but once he saw the puppy it was too late.

So anyway, now we have the adorable little puppy. We have been working on crate training him and it seems to be going very well. He's only had two accidents in the crate and I think they are more our fault than his. Other than that he has done very well. One of us gets up and takes him out in the morning and then feeds him. Then I shower and get dressed and take him out and he does his business. I go home for lunch and take him out right away and then let him run around the kitchen and stuff while I'm home. In the evening when I get home I take him out right away again and then give him a little dinner and in about 30 minutes I take him out again and he does his business.

I'm not foolish enough to think that he's housetrained. I know that left alone he would go all over my floor. But he seems to be doing much better than our dog that we had years ago. I

've read that this is a pretty smart breed. Does anyone have one or know much about them?

I'm just really impressed with him so far. This morning after I got DD up she let him out of the crate so she could love on him for a few minutes before she left for school and I asked him if he needed to go potty and he ran over to me at the door. (We hang the leash right behind the door.) And I swear that last night he was playing with DD and he went over and looked at the door and looked at me and when I took him out he went right away. I just feel like he kind of understands already. But we've only had him for a couple of days.

I think the secret early on is never to give them the opportunity to go on the floor. Take them out so much that they never associate your carpet with pottying. So you are right on track there!

I've never seen one, I don't think. Have any pics? Congratulations on your new addition!

I think it is a DisRule: any new furbabies...and pics are required. :goodvibes

Here is our American Eskimo, Nanook

They do seem to be a pretty smart breed. They have long been used in circus type acts since they master tricks quickly. We had to sign a waiver when we adopted her about a year and a half ago that we would not sell her into the entertainment industry.

They are fiercely protective of their family, and very affectionate. Nanook will growl at a leaf if it blows too close to one of my kids :) She likes going for walks and being social too. I think they're a great breed for families, especially for kids since they don't get too large.

We have a miniature American Eskimo(about 14lbs) - she is SMART. However, she is also one to not forget anything - so if she's mad at you, she will go on the floor. They are very trainable, she still does all her tricks she learned when she was a puppy. All in all, she's been a wonderful dog - she's 14 and still runs up and down flipping all over the place like a puppy.

I'm not sure what size he is going to be. The papers don't say. He looks just like my pomeranian did as a puppy just bigger. I'm guessing he's about 4 or 5 pounds right now.

I'll try to post some pictures later. I've never posted pics on here before. I know I can't do it from work though.

I'm glad to hear that they do well with kids. My daughter is in love with him already.

My experience w/a mini Alaskan Eskimo has been different, but due to abuse I believe. We rescued our furbaby a year ago this past Mother's Day. Her age is unknown. She was thrown over the fence at the shelter & injured her back & had to heal from that before we brought her home. Also we're not sure if she's truly deaf or just ignores us...I'm guessing she ignores us because she understands the word "cookie". She's very hand shy & timid; shows no affection to anyone except my DD15. It's very sad really, and it's not her fault. Anyone but a true dog lover would've probably taken her back, but she's ours & we love her.

Here's mine... Snowflake

She is immensely smart... to the point she can open doors and turn on/off the TV if I leave the remote out for her.

Things about our Spitz, Crystal.

1- learned to love my vaccum. She sheds and when you think she can't shed any more, she does. We brush her, but she hates it and fights us.

2 - very lovie dog. She sits right at your feet and needs to be near someone at all times. Will do tricks for DD to get treats.

3 - with her neediness, she has seperation issues. When she was left alone, she would chew and destroy anthing she could get her jaws around. After a couple of episodes, we started to crate her. She had been in the crate prior, just not for long periods of time. This lead to her getting herself so worked up, that she would slobber and drool and her chest and paws would be soaking wet when we would get home. The longer we were gone, the worse it would be. She now gets gated in our bedroom with the radio on for company.

4 - very protective of the family. Anybody who comes to the house, she is very leery of, barking at them at first, finally calming down, but she remains skittish until they leave. We have always had to bar her from the bedroom area when the kids have friends spend the night over, as she will get worked up as the kids come in and out of their bedrooms. There is only one person outside of the four of us that is a regular in our house that she doesn't feel is a "threat" and that is DH best friend. In truth, the older she gets, the worse the "protectiveness" gets. Just in the last 7-8 months, we have noticed she is disliking any one other than the 4 of us in the house. And the kids rough housing with each other, sets her off.

She has been a really great dog. If I could post a picture of her I would, put the site says I can't post pictures. But she look exactly JB's Nanook.

My American Eskimo was exceedingly smart. She was such a sweet and loving dog.

She was NOT good with other animals. Even other dogs. Cats were the enemy. :(

I was a teenager when I first got her and I always wanted to take her to the lake and stuff with me, but she would puke before we got to the highway (3/4 mile). She was NEVER able to travel. My sister had an Eskimo too and she was the same way as far as getting car sick.

Wow, sounds like these are some pretty smart dogs. That makes me feel good about getting him housebroken. I feel bad keeping him crated so much. We let him out when we get home, but if someone can't be right there to watch him, he has to go back in the crate. I don't want him to have a chance to wet on the floor. Since DH and I both work full time I hope he will get used to being in the house alone during the day.

It's been raining and yucky since we got him on Tuesday, but as soon as its nicer out I want to take him to the park or to our friend's house who has a dog and try to get him used to being around other dogs or people. We have friends that come over regularly so I hope that he will get accustomed to other people being in the house.

Thanks for all the info! I'm excited about our new family member and I think that DH made a good choice!

Mine gets carsick too. It might be the breed. She also doesn't like going for long walks. Maybe a 1/4 mile max. Any more than that, she sits down and plants herself - and you either have to pick her up or drag her because she's not walking. :rotfl:

That's funny. My pom was sort of like that. She wouldn't walk on a leash at all. She would run all over the yard and play with you, but she would not walk on a leash. As soon as you put it on her she would just plop down and not move. She also got car sick. As soon as the car started moving she would start drooling and if it took too long she would throw up.

This little puppy looks so much like a pom. I was worried on the way home that he would throw up on me but he seemed perfectly content to be in the car.

I think it is a breed thing. When I worked for the vet clinic we had a client who bred them. Those poor things were so nasty when we would get them out for their vaccinations. I am sure they were nice and white and fluffy when she put them in the pet taxi.....

Really? Mine loves riding in a car, and exceedingly long walks, even in the caribbean.

interesting that your dog wasn't too keen on other animals or car trips.

We take Nanook from here (Texas) to Arkansas with us sometimes, and she does just fine in the car for the ride. We let her out once or twice when we stop so she can stretch, but otherwise she just curls up and sleeps in the floorboards of the backseat.

As for other animals, she was our first dog, but we already had 2 cats indoors and she never really bothered with them. Once we got a second dog, Nanook became more of an outside dog, as she finally seemed to realize she wasn't human:lmao: but she plays well with the other dog, as well as the cats who are now also outdoors due to my son finally coming home and not wanting to risk any chance of him getting sick with the pet dander. All the cats and dogs seem to get along just fine. My other dog is very submissive to Nanook, which is funny since she is about 15 lbs bigger. She started off smaller but never seemed to figure out that she is now the biggest of the animals.

Nanook is by far, our most affectionate animal of them all though.

Wow, this puppy is really smart. He already will stand at the door and whine if he needs to go out. If he's playing and you ask him if he needs to go out he will run over to you at the door and sit down and wait for you to put his leash one and take him out and then he goes straight to the area of the yard where we have been taking him to go.

But this morning I took him out and then gave him breakfast and put him back in his crate so I could get in the shower. When I got out of the shower he came bouncing in the bathroom. I though maybe I hadn't closed the door good so I just took him and put him back and finished getting ready. I got DD up and she got dressed and played with him for a few minutes and then I took him outside again and then put him back in the crate.

DH called me on his way to work and said he had gotten out again so he had put a clip on the crate door so he couldn't open it. When I went home for lunch I took him outside and stuff and then put him back but I didn't put the clip on there. I watched him try to open the door. It was no accident that he got it open this morning. He is reaching through with his paw and pushing the latch up and then trying to slide it over. I never saw him get it open but I think it was because he would stop when he realized I was looking at him.
It was very cute. But now I have to worry about him getting out. With no one home I have no doubt that he would use the bathroom all over my house.
