Err...cancelling Sprint

So, we cancelled Sprint and got the deactivation fees waived. I know when you pay, you pay a month ahead. So, when I paid the bill on March 4, it was for March 1-31. We cancelled on March 13. In my mind, they should prorate what we used and give us a refund! (I know if we were to ACTIVATE our service, they would prorate it for that time!). After being on the phone with them for 45 minutes yesterday, talking to 4 different people, hanging up on the person from India, etc., I was finally able to tell them that yes, the deactivation fees are waived. But, they said they don't prorate when someone cancels service. That just bugs me. I so want to call our CC and have them dispute the charge, but I don't want a 'ding' on my credit report if they say I didn't pay the bill (so I won't do that). Anyway, is there any chance they would pro-rate it, or any thoughts? I should just let it go, but I can't stand Sprint and this just really really made me not happy!

you are disputing an issue. why would you get a ding on your credit report?

Yes, there's a chance they should prorate your service cost. I'm relatively certain it's illegal to charge you for a service they're not only not providing, but that you proactively terminated almost three weeks ago.

Speaking from experience, no, Sprint won't prorate the charges. They consider your cancellation effective on the last date of the service month in which you cancelled, and they don't issue refunds for partially-used months.

I cancelled one year ago and paid the ETF fee, I also asked that my service be pro-rated and a supervisor was able to pro-rate the service for me.

I just very recently had this same issue with Sprint. We have 3 phones and I cancelled one. They did it through the end of that month. Will be cancelling the other 2 phones in about a month. I just have to say that I have had the worst customer service with Sprint for the last 17 months and can't wait to be completely rid of them.

My one daughter has switched to Virgin Mobile and has had no problems with it - at much less cost

Sprint didn't pro-rate for me. My billing cycle was from the 24th to the 23rd. I cancelled on the 10th.

They tried to charge me the EFT (3 phones @ $50 each) and some regulatory fees ($9). I sent an email to the person who told me the ETF was to be waived (because of their discontinuing the discount on the 2nd line of service). I was told that the adjustment would take 3-5 days. I sent another email the next day (through the "contact us" portion of the website) and asked why I was being charged the $9.

The next day, all fees were waived/adjusted and my bill was $0. I didn't bother asking about the pro-rating of fees.

Interesting that PP's daughter doesn't have problems with Virgin Mobile. I thought the underlying carrier was Sprint?

Virgin Mobile uses Sprint service(cell towers) but is a TOTALLY separate company. I have none of the issues that my friend that has Sprint does.

Wow. That's one of the reasons why I went back to Verizon. Those Sprint towers always seemed to have no signal where I was going/heading. :confused3

This isn't relevant to cell phone billing. But I used to have Verizon for land-line phone and DSL. I called to cancel both because I was going with Comcast for Triple Play service by broadband. I got a final bill from Verizon for both items and paid it right away.

A few months later when I did my free AnnualCreditReport, there was a collection item from Verizon. I called Verizon, and they told me I had never cancelled the DSL, then never paid the ensuing months. First, I did call to cancel. Second, I never received a bill for continued service, and certainly there was no bill to me indicating I was late paying something.

The person I complained to had the nerve to tell me that I was supposed to call a different number to cancel the DSL service (blamed me for the problem). At the time I had cancelled, I very clearly explained that I was cancelling both items. No one advised me to call a different number at that time. In the end, Verizon looked up the fact that I had paid in full for a supposed final amount. They took off the collection report and zeroed out any balance owed. What a bunch of schmucks! They were willing to ruin my credit, when their p-poor service was the only problem.
