Equestrian “Sport”

During my 1972 visit my family saw the horse act in the afternoon and went to the Ice Capades in the evening. The Ice Capades had a summer residency in Atlantic City for years back then. Different venue.

Some of the human novelty skating stunts seemed more dangerous than the horse dive.

I remember a man/woman team who played badminton on ice skates.

Not sure if the Ice Capades even exist anymore.

Not in person but Disney made a movie about horse diving of a pier back in the 90s called Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken. Might be on Disney + now.

One of our family's favorite movies.....I had never heard about the sport before the movie came out. It is a sweet movie but not a sport that would "fly" these days.

I was just about to mention this! Yes it's on there, I remember it when it came out, but never saw it. I heard the woman went blind from diving, but I can't imagine it's healthy for the horse either.

Never saw horse diving, but I do remember seeing a human high diving act at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Anyone who saw the act more than once would see who the plant (someone from the crowd who "volunteers" to dive) is. I also remember going back to see the show at night, and the announcer was dressed differently.

I saw the diving horse with my family in the mid 1960's. I was 5 or 6 years old.

The Steel Pier also had a "diving bell" that brought passengers down into the ocean. It only went down about 10 feet but the shills made it seem like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

My brother and I begged our father to let us go down. He said he went on it decades before and wasn't worth it but finally relented to stop our whining. At age six I stupidly thought we'd see the diving horse swimming down below.

What a disappointment!!! Nothing but murky water. No seahorse or mermaid sightings.

I own a horse. If he didn’t want to dive there is no way I could make him.

Could you ask him to make sure? If he's not capable of telling you no, it's not the same. Some people would have no problem drugging a horse to get them to dive. Regardless, this is a ridiculous argument. I think you know the two situations aren't the same.

I'd told folks to take a long walk off a short pier, does that count?

Sure, if you forced them to. :p

Well his days of being a one meter jumper are over. He had no problems with that. Did well actually. He’s living out his life now quite well, trust me.

Sure, if you forced them to. :p

I don't know if the metric for whether this "sport" good/bad should be whether the horse WANTS to jump.
