Hi all,

Is it true that that candy animals etc that Miyuki makes on request are not given out anymore?

We were last in the world back in Feb 2010 and our girls were chosen and she made them a panda which she gave them to take home.

However I have been told recently that Disney had stopped Miyuki from giving out the candy due to health reasons or something silly like that.

Please tell me this isnt true?

Many thanks

It's true. She's no longer able to hand them out.

I haven't heard a definitive reason, but the two most commonly cited are that

A) It was a health code violation
B) Parents were pitching a fit that their precious little spawn didn't get one.

When we were there in April of last year she could not give them out at that time.

Are you at least able to buy one then?

1) Yes, it is health code.
2) No it is not just because she does not wear gloves.
3) The OFFICIAL DETERMINATION is the candy-making cart is not setup as a food facility:
. . . the operation is classified as candy-making
. . . law says candies must be made in a food preparation facility
. . . the cart does not meet the law for food a mobile facility
. . . cart must be adequately equipped and fully satisfy all food facility requirements
. . . Florida Law: Chapter 500, F.S., section 5K-4, F.A.C. (mobile food establishments)
4) There are over six pages of requirements, one can read several violations:
. . . bare hands touching unprepared food
. . . food has lack of protection from bird, insects, dust, etc
. . . no adequate containers/utensils to protect the food
. . . no hand washing sink or three-stage sink (either under different rules)
. . . maintenance of food and non-food surfaces
. . . extra utensils that are sanitized

NOTE:
Yes, it didn't help that parents and kids would yell if they did not one.
Some kids would wait at the cart for 2-3 shows and get one each time.
The parents of others would go ballistic.

While she doesn't give the candy away, she does still take requests by the children of which animal to create. She chooses around four to six kids and asks which animal they would like her to make. At the end of her show, she'll let the children she called on take a picture w/ her and the candy animal they asked her to make.
Even though she no longer is allowed to give the candy away, her show is still amazing and is so worth going to. We didn't see her show on previous trips but was able to catch her this past June. My girls were unaware that she used to give out the candy so when she didn't this time it wasn't an issue for us. They were so amazed by her talent and the fascination of getting to hold the candy and take a picture with her that they weren't even concerned about not getting to keep the candy. Everyone in my family loved seeing her!

Maybe they'll set her up in a little kiosk in Mitsukoshi or a booth outside (they have tons of this anyway) and maybe they can set up a lottery system where its not the Candy Lady that's picking the person (where personal bias will obviously get in the way), but a truly randomized system.

There's really no need for a lottery/randomized system. Miyuki is well known for picking polite and well behaved children and adults. So long as you're not rude or your kid isn't a screeching harpy, there's no reason why they won't get picked. Get to her booth thingy early, and be nice, that's all there is to it. If you don't get picked in that show, come back for the next one. She tends to notice if you're coming to a second show and tends to try to pick those people first.

Also keep in mind, no one is getting the candy anymore, and if you NEED to pick an animal for her to make that badly, it's not so hard to be nice. I'd also say that if you have more than one kid, you may want to explain to them that it's 1 animal per family and have them agree on 1 choice. She also can't make specific characters...a kid asked for a Pikachu when I was there last and she said no because it's a licensed character. If you say a Disney character as some little ones will, you'll get a generalized version. My friend's first pick was a peacock, but Miyuki said it takes too long, so we said "How about a fish? Like Nemo?" and she made a clownfish.

My daughter had the honor of being picked a few years ago while she still gave the candy away. DD asked for an Octopus and it was fantastic! I have the video of her making it. DD was the last to be picked for that performance and I had been watching this man across from us who kept pointing and tapping the heads of his 2 sons with a "pick one of them" attitude and it was a bit annoying and they never got picked. We took the candy into the shop next to where the performance was and asked for a bag to carry it in. The lady asked DD if she knew how fortunate she was to be picked and DD said she did. She packaged the candy up nicely in a box with foam to keep it safe. We had that Octopus on DD's shelf for at least a year or so and one day the darn dog got into the room and somehow managed to get it down and ate it....I still get mad about that today and it makes me sad...DD remembers too and will comment about the dog eating the candy. We have some nice pictures, but it's not the same! I wish they still gave out the candy...it was an incredible memory we will never forget.:goodvibes

I will have to look into that! Thanks so much KCMO neighbor! I appreciate it...my daughter would be so surprised to get another Octopus...going to check her website out!

Her "website" (which is a stretch cause half of its in Japanese, and there really isn't much there!) is hard to read, but I have ordered from her through her form. Also, if you want, ask her about doing a candy piece of your daughter. Just email her a photo and she'll design one up of HER!

Are you implying that websites that are not in English aren't "websites"? :confused3 What?

Anyways. Thank you for the website. I'd like to order something... hopefully she accepts

The candy lady still makes the candies - and takes requests - but she does not give it away.

I know there is a place where you can find her schedule, but I can't find it! Can someone provide it please?? We JUST missed her last time, and I was totally bummed!
