My 8 yo DD would like to know if anyone knows how much it costs to select an oyster for a potential pearl at the store in Japan.

You can also buy one in AK's Asia section & behind the Yacht/Beach Clubs out on the walkway by Cresent lake. I'd probably get one in Japan though, those Japanese CMs are so nice!

we just did this in may! my son chose mine and i got a 7mm champagne colored pearl. i had it set into a birthstone necklace setting and it cost about $13 for the pearl and about $25 for the setting. i may be wrong on the setting...it may have been less. it really did not cost me that much.

oh...and if you choose to pick an oyster you are guarenteed to get a pearl. they dont guarentee color or size. only that there will be one in there.

Every time I've gone to DW I've gone to japan and picked and Oyster! I now have 8 pearls of different colors and sizes and I plan on getting another one in December. My 10 year old daughter picked one last time and came out with a silver one that she had set in a necklace...I was thinking $13 to $15.00 per oyster. Have a fun time picking YOURS!

Wow we never did this....sounds perfect for our next trip. My girls love jewelry! Can you get it set or made into something where you pick them?

Yep, you can get the set when you pick them, wherever that may be.

We love picking the pearls in Japan...it is so much fun!

My 3 DD's do this on every trip. If you don't have it set into jewelry this trip, they will drop it into a tiny ziplock with the size and other info on the front. We take a Ball point pen and mark the childs' name on it and the date. We always get them in Japan. anyway, the girls are saving them until they get a "match" for earrings, or maybe something else. So far they haven't expressed having them mounted, so we just keep collecting them. Gee, wouldn't they make something nice for mom?

Thank you for all the great info. I think I may get one too! I'm glad that they guarantee a pearl; I was explaining that not every oyster has a pearl so she wouldn't be terribly disappointed. I don't think she particularly cares how big it is, just that there is one. This will be fun!

I did the pearl picking a couple years and I loved. My question is that the pearl came out of the ring setting. Do you think they could reset it for me? I really loved it but I was afraid it was not worth the money to have a jewelry store reset it. What do you think?

I can remember when it was around $7 to do this, inflation, oh well...we have done it many times. I just love doing it.....Enjoy..
