Okay....I'd be upset too, but with an 11yo asking mom who they can sue and mom wanting people fired because their luggage didn't make it on time for a pageant....they sound a little more Toddlers and Tiara-ish versus someone deserving empathy.

http://www.clickorlando.com/news/24785706/detail.html

Sounds like they just were the unfortunate victims if a chain of events.

It sounds like they think they're the only people to ever have luggage lost. :rotfl:

Delta loses lots of people's luggage. Beauty queen isn't special. :lmao:

We had to outfit DS for a ski trip at the Denver Walmart once because Delta lost his bag. I'm a lawyer, and we didn't sue or even threaten to do so. :rolleyes1

And my first thought is, Why is this newsworthy? Plenty of people lose their luggage every day without having articles written about it. Sorry kid, you're no more important than the rest of us.

This is why we ALWAYS fly American Airlines.
On time, and the luggage always makes it too. :)

Well, it does sound like Delta screwed up. That's why I rarely check a bag.

If it were me I wouldn't have my daughter in a pageant.

But if I did, you get two carry on items each. One roller bag and one other smaller bag.

They couldn't have fit all they had to have in there? I can pack for a week long trip in my rollerbag!

“He scanned it and says, ‘We don’t have any record of your baggage,’” Mrs. Short said. She persisted with the receipts to no avail. “When the guy told me ‘I don’t know how long you’re going to stand there and stare at me…I can’t help you,’ I just can’t fathom treating someone like that. So then he just leaves. He leaves us standing there and locks up the little office.”

And so bag-less and frustrated, the Shorts went on their way to find the ground transportation Delta had arranged for them back in Orlando. End of story? Not exactly. Not even close. When they approached Delta’s ticket counter in Dallas, they were told that there was no authorization of ground transportation in their record. Apparently, not only were the Shorts bag-less, they were voucher-less as well for a costly thirty-minute cab ride from Dallas-Fort Worth to Love Field. Aimee’s mother appealed to the same ticket agent twice, and then dialed customer service several times. Even after customer service finally authorized the ground transportation, the ticket agents refused to provide the vouchers until a supervisor was called to the scene.

“(Aimee) was crying at this point. We’re stranded at this airport,” Mrs. Short told Local 6. “They were bordering on sadistic almost, like, ooh, let’s see how this plays out…”

Well, assuming her side of the story is what happened, they WERE treated pretty badly. Still, this is exactly why you should NEVER check a bag that you 100% have to have upon arrival. All it takes is one weather delay or mechanical break-down to get your bad delayed for a couple of days, and on a short trip that's a huge deal.

The article does appear that they were treated rudely but to sue...

How many times do your read of a wedding dress not making it, or someone's business for an interview or a big meeting? Do they get to sue too?

Maybe they were treated rudely, but I agree that they should have packed the vital stuff (costumes, shoes, accessories, etc) in a carry-on roller bag.

So true!!

But back in Sept 2006 (I think) right after the shoe bomber they were very strict for a week or two about no carryon luggage. So I checked a bag with Delta - which to this day has never arrived nor have I received a penny from Delta for my lost belongings.

The worst part (not Delta's fault) was that I had accidentally let my driver's license expire which I discovered at the airport on my outgoing flight. I really was SURE that I was not going to be able to rent a car. But my sister gave me the advice "Just fake it at the Hertz counter" which I did. I cannot believe they let me have a car. Even more I can't believe I took it as I was legally an unlicensed driver and would have been in big trouble if I'd been in an accident.

But thank goodness I did have a car as back then there was not a pair of shorts to be had on property. I was staying at Beach Club and was determined to have a bathing suit so I could go to Stormalong Bay.

This is so true. I'm not a beauty pageant Mom but everyone knows if you want to make sure it gets there, you carry it on! :thumbsup2

24 hours to receive lost luggage? Not bad actually. My luggage didn't make it once, I was upset (it was late and the flight was already delayed, so I think I was just a little tired) but never did it cross my mind to sue! I did write a letter to the airline to suggest that if they had flights arriving late, their baggage office should be open until all their flights have landed for the day. Never expected anything (nor did I get anything!) so $150, plus the refund of baggage fees sounds more than reasonable to me.

And as for the ground transfer?? Get it in writing.

This kind of thing happens every day, they're not special.

Honestly, I think we do get to feel "entitled" to having our luggage shortly after we get off the plane.

We are also "entitled" to have thoughts about suing and about people who treated us poorly losing their jobs.

So I don't put a negative spin on the word "entitled" here, because they were allowed to think those thoughts and the airline SHOULD have put their bags onto the plane in order to get it to them around the time their plane landed!

"Her mom altered her evening gown, thankfully packed in the carry-on luggage"...obviously they had stuff carried on. I also imagine that quite a lot of what was in the checked luggage was her makeup, and I imagine that those containers were far more than the 311 baggies could hold. So she likely didn't have much of a chance. But they did carry some of the important items on.

DH has had his bag delayed by Delta twice now in a year. It's NOT fun for him at all, and he does get very angry when it happens, especially b/c of their nearly useless tracking system. Things can only be tracked IF they are being scanned, and just like when UPS doesn't scan things as often as we feel they should, it's hard when luggage isn't being scanned along the way.
In DH's case, he's a big guy and his clothes cost a lot, so he doesn't have many clothes. When he packs his one bag for work trips, he has nearly ALL of his clothes with him. When his bag is delayed, he has that one outfit and that's pretty much it, until the bag finds him. And if he were ever to file a claim, the max amount wouldn't even cover the extremely reasonable price of the bag itself, let alone the expensive (b/c big men's clothes are expensive, NOT because his clothes are fancy) clothes inside.

It's not fun having bags delayed when you really really really NEED the items inside, and it's not wrong to feel entitled to help when it happens.

First of all, people keep mentioning suing. Other than a stressed out pre-teen beauty queen, who has mentioned suing? Am I missing it? (Seriously, if I missed it in the article, let me know.) All I see is the 11 year old mentioning people being sued or fired. Not the mom. I'm not saying that's ok, but she's 11, stressed out, and probably very disappointed.

In addition, assuming the details are true, it sounds like the baggage guy didn't even try to help and was rude and after that they find out that even though they were promised ground transportation, no one arranged it as they should have.

I'm sorry, but I'd be ticked too.

I few years ago, DD's dance team qualified for the Junior Olympics. They were a 14 hour drive each way. We all drove & went in a caravan except one family. That mother decided for her & her DD to fly. The dance instructor told her to send her costumes with someone who was driving. It was a good thing because their luggage was lost. They did give them compensation & one of the parents drove them somewhere to get clothes. If her costumes had been in her checked luggage, the team would not have been able to perform.

No formal lawsuit has been filed nor did I suggest it would be. The 11 yo is quoted in the article as quoting herself as asking her mom about suing.

Mom is quoted as saying people should be fired.

I am not saying they were treated nicely and that it didn't stink to lose luggage. However....an 11yo even thinking about suing because she didn't have all her stuff speaks volumes to me. And the fact that the news did a story about it...speaks a lot about mom.

It is a crap happens story and nothing more. But they decided to make a stink.

My sister's husband is a former employee of NWA and now a current employee of delta. So I am in no way defending Delta as he certainly wouldn't. Bun if we all ran to the news every time crap happened....there just aren't enough news channels to cover it all.

“I would just say to Delta to fire those people, and get some new people in there that actually care,” Aimee told Local 6.

Aimee is the 11 year old.

I can agree that the news story was unnecessary. I just feel like people are being a little rough and making a lot of assumptions about this family. It also seems like some people are responding as if the family was just upset because their luggage was lost. It was more than that.

While I understand other opinions in this thread, I just feel that we, like that family, may be overreacting or being a little too harsh.

That's just my opinion. Sorry it doesn't match everyone else's. :hippie:

Oh crud......I hate it when I do that. Totally didn't catch the name shift as it was saying a bunch of stuff the mom had said.

Yeah. When I was reading the article I was really wishing they'd make a choice about how to refer to her instead of bouncing around between Tammie, Mother, Aimee's mom, and Mrs. Short. I kept having to reread to be sure who they were talking about.
