I am going on my first trip to disney world in october. As of right now, I have 2 GB of memory. I feel I should get some more memory. I take a lot of pictures. What do I do if I run out of memory down there?

You can pay to have the pics on your 2 GB card burned to a CD (much more expensive there than at a WalMart or CVS or Walgreens, etc...). You could buy another card at Disney which also is much more expensive than online or even at a Best Buy or Circuit City place.

Best bet: Buy more now, before you go down. Your better off having more than enough than not enough. Especially how much the prices on media cards have come down (most especially if you use SD cards.).

I have found that as I get older I am losing my memory so I have started compensating for it by buying more memory cards. So far though I have not been able to retrieve my memory from the cards. My camera though has been very appreciative of having the extra cards.

I base the number of memory cards I need on how many pictures I want to take before having to download or save the images. If I plan on taking my laptop or some other device where I can move the images to I will take 1 or 2 cards. If on the other hand I am not taking anything with me where I can save the images I will take 6 or 7 4GB memory cards to last my whole trip. You just need to assess how many pictures you think you might take during your vacation and then decide whether you have the ability to save the images so you can reuse your card again. When deciding on how many pictures you plan to take I would look at previous events (family vacations, reunions, birthdays, etc.) and see how many shots you made then double that since it seems everywhere on Disney property is a photo opportunity. Take that total number and then determine how many pictures your camera will store on your card. That should give you a rough idea of how many cards it would take to cover your whole trip. You can then make a decision of whether to buy additional cards or find somewhere to have the images burned onto a disk.

I am heading down with 9GB total over several 1GB and 2GB cards. I would rather make sure I have enough before I get there and have to pay prime Disney Dollars for them. A lot of how much memory you need depends on the size of the images your camera will take. For me I take a few hundred pics per day while in the parks that can eat up a 1GB card at least per day.

my bold lettering but ain't that the truth, now if only i had a slot in my head so i could keep adding more and more...

i used about 5.5 gb using my 8mp camera in a 14 day vacation ( not to wdw, so i took more pics that i would if i was doing something like riding attractions) i couldn't decide what to get to store it on so just got more memory than i thought i'd use( had about 6 usable gb with me) and imo that worked better for me than having to worry about downloading to something else...it's hard enough for me to remember to charge the batteries...see bold lettering above

Is there a link or a chart somewhere that shows "if you have a X MP camera, you can fit X photos on a 1 GB memory card"? I feel like I've seen it, but can't find it!

TIA!

Your owner's manual will probably have such a chart.

Ah, how quickly times changed... back when I went to Romania in 2002, I took along three 128m SmartMedia cards (and the 16m one that came with my camera) and that seemed like a lot! Of course, I did fill them all up but I was able to get by OK on a nine-day trip. Of course, that was with a 2mp Fuji... and memory was a lot more expensive!

Since it will be my first trip, I will be taking a TON of pictures. I take a lot of pictures anyway. Does anybody know how much it costs to put your photos on a CD? Maybe I will buy two more 1 GB cards.

There are many charts like that, but unfortunately that number varies from camera to camera, based on a lot of things, such as - the camera's settings, the camera's JPG compression algorithms, and the subject of each individual pic.

Your best bet is to check the owners manual of your camera to see if there is a chart there, and if not, you can try the following sites to look up your camera (the charts are often included in the camera reviews):

I haven't priced this in the parks lately but last time I checked it was around $16-$20 to have your images burned to CD. I also thought there was a limit to how many pictures they put on the disk but I may be totally off base on that.

At a minimum I would go with 2 cards regardless of whether you plan to have the images burned to disk while at the parks. I am kind of paranoid anyway so I would be worried if I went with a single card and something happened to it I would not be able to take any more pictures for the remainder of the trip. The price of cards in the parks is substantually higher than you can get elsewhere so you might want to consider that in your decision.

Disney charges $12.99 per CD, limit 120 pics per CD. This can be done at the camera shops in all 4 theme parks, and at the Kodak Imageworks in Epcot's Imagination Pavilion. There are also self-service CD downloading machines in the camera shops at MK and MGM, and at Imageworks - same price, but you don't have to wait.

Off-site Walgreens stores in teh WDW area have 24-hour photo centers that will download your pics to CD for only $3.99 per CD, until the CD is full. If you have a car, I highly recommend using an off-site place to back up your photos. Walgreens will also make prints at reasonable prices if you want to print a few immediately (such as for getting Pooh to autograph that pic you took with him).

The other thing to remember is that a CD maxes out at 700 megs (and occasionally even 650) - if you have a two-gig memory card, it'll take three CDs to hold it all!

It's definitely cheaper in the long run and certainly much easier to just buy more memory, rather than having to take time to have CDs burnt then carry around CDs rather than tiny memory cards.

Of course, when you get home, you should put everything on CD or DVD for backup purposes, but that's not what you want to be doing on your trip. :)

I have the Rebel XT ans 1gb card. At the highest jpg setting, I get 260-290 pictures.

I download every day or two to the laptop, and have never had an issue with just the 1gb. If your going to shoot raw, I'd say get more memory, but for jpg 1gb and daily downloading will be more than adequate.

$2.99 per CD. My 2 gig card was 4 CDs. I go to Walmart. It really was the best place around. And pretty fast.

See if you can not afford a 2 gig card. I LOVE my 2 gig. Well except my husband managed to 'misplace' it in the house somewhere. :rolleyes1 Honestly, tho that is my favorite card. I found my 5 1 gig cards but all be doggonned if the 2 gig has taken a vacation somewhere in the house.

I have a 2GB Memory Stick Pro, as well as a couple of 256MB sticks. At the finest setting, it holds 815 photos. I thought about buying another 2GB stick, but found something better. I did some research and spoke to a very knowledgeable salesperson at my local Circuit City about the SmartDisk 40GB PhotoBank. At 40GB, it will hold about 16,300 pictures (815 pictures per 2GB stick times 20 downloads). It was on sale for $149. The salesperson said there was no way I could fill it. I told him I was going to WDW for 10 days and bet I could get somewhat close to it. The SmartDisk PhotoBank has a slot for CompactFlash ® I, CompactFlash ® II, MicroDrive, SmartMedia, MemoryStick ®, MemoryStick-PRO ™, SD, Mini-SD and MultiMediaCard. You insert your memory card in to the machine and press copy. The machine will then create a separate folder and save all of the photos on that memory in to that folder and will let you know when it is complete. Each time the memory card is inserted and copy is pressed, it will create a new folder each time, so as not to override another folder. Includes a User guide, USB cable, AC/DC adapter, Pouch & Driver software. Very easy transfer from unit to pc. Downloads the pictures in the separate folders they are saved in to. I love this unit! Now I only have to bring the one 2GB memory stick, instead of fooling around with several. Once I have done downloading the photos on to my pc, I will burn them on to cd-roms as a backup. Plus, I prefer to take a cd to a camera machine to make pictures versus inserting my memory stick. Have seen several people either lose their stick in the machine (went too far in) or damaged it.

i carry an epson p-2000 and copy my used cards to it so i can reuse them during the day. pricey, but priceless in my opinion.

Do I need a computer to load my photos onto that Photobank? How do I retrieve my photos from it?

There's only one big problem...

Hard drives (and especially laptop hard drives, which no doubt that uses) are very unreliable by nature.

I just get very nervous if someone is hoping to save all their photos on a hard drive. As I work in the PC biz, I see them failing all the time. Certainly not all do, but they are in no way reliable.

Anyway, I think someone earlier linked to a similar device called the Digimate II Plus, which was basically the same but you supplied your own 2.5" hard drive. That was $35 and you can pick up a 40g drive for $50 or so (the site they linked to had a 30g for $35), saving a decent amount of money in the process. What you've got might be fine too, as long as it's not TOO difficult to open it up and replace the hard drive when it fails.

You do not need a PC to load photos into the PhotoBank. You insert your memory stick directly into the PhotoBank and copy the photos from the stick in to the PhotoBank.

You will need a PC to retrieve the photos from the PhotoBank. It comes with a USB cable and it is very easy to transfer the photos into your pc. Once the transfer is complete, I always burn my photos on to cd-roms as back-ups. I also am not comfortable putting a $100 memory stick into one of the photo machines at CVS, Walgreen's, etc. as they are not responsible (according to the screen) for any damage to or loss of photos on your memory device. Would rather use a cd-rom to review and choose photos to print.

I am REALLY new to the digital world, so this may sound like a dumb question. When we bought my Canon S2 at Circuit City, the guy there told us not to take our 2G card (that we had just purchased) to Wal-Mart, Wal-greens, CVS etc. to have them print pictures because their machines would fry the card! :confused3 He said the card would read that there were images, but you'd never be able to retrieve them, so he recommended downloading images to a CD at home and then taking CD to Walgreen's to print pics. Would Walgreens actually be able to download to a CD without ruining my card, is this guy crazy? We will not have a laptop at WDW and this is our first trip, so I don't want to lose my pictures!
