Sorry, but I am sick of them! I don't smoke. Dh comes homes from work and we like to enjoy a couple of light comedy shows while we eat dinner.

THEN! BOOM! A picture of open heart surgery. Someone gasping for their last breath!

Sorry, but we already lost people in our families to lung cancer. They had smoked for years and I can tell you these commercials would not have made them quit.

Isn't there a better way? I don't want to see this at dinner time :headache:

That are very harsh, aren't they? I guess that's the point but they are rough to see. All I can hope is that they keep some kids from ever starting to smoke.

Agree...

I worked for the American Lung Association and sadly shock is one of the few ways to sway smokers.
We did so many inservices, surveys and time and time again "shock" was what would get smokers attention.

I lost my mom to lung cancer last year. Each time one of those commercials come on, I get to relive the pain of her last few months all over again :sad1:

But it's no longer shock when you're inundated with the message. Don't you think people will become desensitized?

Yikes! I don't see commercials like that here, but then again I don't watch that much t.v either. I can see both sides though. I would love for something to get to my DH that would get him to quit (I quit 4 years ago) so it maybe would help him...BUT I also lost my mom to COPD and that was very devastating to go through (for her & my family) so it would bother me to see things related to that.

I don't the target audience is necessarily current smokers.
i think its to sway people from even starting probably the most disgusting habit out there. Unless you are over the age of 50 i'm not sure why you would have this habit.

Oh I see plenty of smokers under the age of 50, but again, I don't think these commercials ever stopped a real smoker. I also don't really think they prevent anything - if a teen is handed a cigarette and he thinks it will make him look cool to smoke it - these commercials are not what he will be thinking about in that moment.

I lost my MIL and FIL to lung cancer. My mom died of severe asthma caused by second hand smoke. My Dad had heart attacks and open heart surgery, probably due to smoking. He ultimately died of cancer, I'm sure all those years of filterless cigarettes didn't help.

I really don't need to see these commercials :headache: If I thought they were helping that would be one thing. But they are just gross, and why must they be on just when we are trying to relax at the end of the day? ARGH!

I don't know one smoker who is affected by anti-smoking ads

Exactly!!! My BIl died at 67 from smoking related heart disease. He swore after the triple bypass he would quit, guess what?????

If you want to reach young people, please do it in the schools.

Does it say who funds them (I don't watch commercials)? I would wager that the cigarette companies have to pay for these commercials as part of one of the many lawsuit settlements over the years.

I really don't think they are effective but then again I don't think a lot of ad campaigns are effective.

in schools? seriously? are parents not responsible for anything anymore?

they reach my "young" people just fine at home...they think smoking is disgusting.

Kids, who for the most part think of themselves as absolutely invincible, will not be effected by those ads. As for current smokers -- if you're not ready to quit, then you're not ready to quit, and that's all there is to it. I quit over 2 years ago, because I was ready and I wanted to. I wasn't enjoying smoking anymore. It wasn't because of disturbing ads or ever-rising prices.

There is one group that makes the worst anti-smoking ads. I think that they're called Truth or something similar. DS has commented and I agree that their ads are probably having the opposite effect. They are just really silly IMO.

I LOVE those commercials- my daughter is totally freaked out by them and I hope it stays in her mind when/if she decides to try smoking!

are you kidding??? Thanks but no thanks- I would prefer they show them at home where I, the PARENT, can talk to her about it rather than just be lectured in school as a group.

I think they should make tobacco illegal, except for the tribes who use it in ceremonies. Why is pot illegal and yet tobacco isn't? Tobacco is far more deadly. I don't mind commercials that are graphic because they remind me of why I quit smoking.
