My ring is from Kays and is made of platinum. I have been engaged 14 months and I have taken it back three times because the band part of it keep chipping. If you run your finger across the band on the inside of my hand, you can feel all these little chips around it.
We have the lifetime service warranty-thank god!
My question is.. is it ridiculous for me to ask for a new ring? I think that there is definitely something wrong with this one.
I don't want a new style or anything because I absolutely love this one. I just don't particularly want to go back 3 times a year for the rest of my life to get this one fixed.

IMO, you should DEFINITELY ask for a new ring. 3 repairs in 14 months is ridiculous. The one you have definitely sounds to be of sub-standard workmanship. IMO, the sooner you ask, the better. If you want more opinions about this, check out the message board on pricescope.com...they know it all about diamonds and jewelry.

My first engagement ring was platinum and I had the exact some problem. Our Jeweler told us that platinum isn't as durable as gold and more soft, therefore making it easier to ding and chip. You will probably notice that over time the ring "molds" to the shape of your finger. Talk to your jeweler and see what suggestions they have. Now I have a gold ring, and I haven't had one problem in 9 months. I am always amazed that it it still the same shape, since I was so used to the platinum. Good Luck!

Platinum is definately a softer metal than gold is... but a word on white gold - depending on where it comes from, you may have to get it redone because certain ones yellow over time... although I don't know the specifics of this, it may be worth it to search online about it.

Also, gold wears away whereas platinum just moves, so no metal is ever lost. It is a give and take situation. You just have to decide what is more important to you.
