Engagement party and bridal shower

My DD is getting married in October 2012 at the wedding pavillion...only 13 months away. When I got engaged in the dinosaur era, I had an engagement party and later a surprise bridal shower and married locally. When doing a destination wedding, do people still have engagement parties and later on a bridal shower or has engagement parties disappeared with the dinosaur age.

i'm not sure about anyone else but my brother & his fiance had an engagement party this past summer so as far as I know people still have them
I do see what you're saying with the destination wedding (i think, i could be wrong - wouldn't be the first time ) - because people have to travel is it right to ask them to come to more parties and go more places?
Personally, destination wedding or not if you want an engagement party or someone wants to throw you a bridal shower GO FOR IT you only get married and have the opportunity for those things once (HOPEFULLY) Enjoy the entire experience and everything that goes with it
