I only heard this done a few times but it sounds very weird to me.

I know it was one of the Apple store guys in the movie Captain America Winter Soldier and I feel like it was played for a "weirdo Apple store employee" vibe, but I've heard it some times after that.

So it's like ending a conversation with "I've been Mike".

Is this a new thing? Regional thing?

This is the first time for me hearing it.

It is commonly used to reinforce the name to the customer for potentlial feedback, like if there is a survey after the call. Mso tpeople don't pay attention to teh name, so ending on that can be helpful. It reminds me of one of my favorite Jungle Cruise Jokes:

"If you have enjoyed your trip today, this has been the World Famous Jungle Cruise. If you did not enjoy your trip, then this has been The Haunted Mansion. And now, a hippo will follow you home!

I do think there was some Jungle Cruise jokes like that, but it was more like "If you enjoyed this cruise my name is Chris, if you didn't enjoy this cruise, my name is Joe"

It's just a different way of saying the same thing.

If anybody ended a conversation with me by saying “I’ve been Mike” I’d be sure to give a bad evaluation if a survey follows.

If you’re going to speak like an idiot, I’m going to treat you like one.

I would probably give them a puzzled look and say “So who are you now?”

I *think* that phrase comes from radio broadcasting originally, where the announcers and reporters started doing that whole business of "this has been Joe Blow, reporting from City X" because listeners could not see them, so they needed to differentiate who was speaking at any given time, lest it sound like one person was having a conversation with himself. Also, it was being recorded, so that also established what we now call metadata; a description of who the speaker was and where he was that could be used to identify the content of the sound recording.

Definitely odd for an in-person presentation, unless it is being recorded and it's being done for that reason.

I speak with many reps/vendors, never heard this before. From what the OP is describing, it's like an audio signature of sorts.

Reminds me of the thread about signing a post with your own name.

That's just awkward. Seems to imply they are going to become someone else shortly.
