Hi I am new to DIS but have been reading the boards for awhile. I figured I should subscribe since I read them alot and will probably ask for help in the future, hence why I am posting now.

My DBF asked the other day for my help in finding me an engagement ring (no plans as to when the question is going to be asked, probably a year or two, we are just looking right now) but the problem is I am a unique girl with unique tastes....I don't want a diamond!

I also work in a laboratory and wear gloves on a fairly regular basis, so I need a stone that is inlaid.

Also I kinda was something that has unique metal work or is a little more intrquie (sp?) than just a band.

The problem is I have not idea really what I want (besides those few vague details) and I have not idea where to start looking because basic google searches just give me sites for diamonds.

Did any of you want something different and if so where did you find it?

Thanks!:yay:

Have you ever thought about designing your own ring and having a jeweler create it for you?? That is what we did with mine...sort of. I really liked the Tiffany & Co. Lucida design, but we could not afford it. We instead sent a photo of the ring I liked to a jeweler and he replicated it perfectly and for a fraction of the cost of a Tiffany ring.

Ooh - designing your own is a great idea!

I also didn't want a diamond, but I was more not crazy about the traditional settings than the diamond (of course, there is that whole conflict-diamond scariness to consider). I looked at other gemstones, but they were all set traditionally like diamonds.

So I started looking at the independent fashion jewelry sites where they get stuff for magazines like InStyle. I found mine on Fragments.com. It has diamonds, but is not a traditional engagement ring.

The Sundance catalog does a lot of inlaid rings - the only thing is, sometimes the stones don't stay put. I had a spiny coral ring of theirs, and one of the pieces fell out. But maybe a higher-end jewelry store would not have that problem?

I have nothing of value to add to this thread. Sorry for the pirate:

I just wanted to say...

Hi, These are pics of my ring. It's definitely not inlaid, but it's an Aquamarine. It's my birthstone and is the color of my DF's eyes. I didn't want a diamond either. and I wanted a somewhat victorian vintage look.

faycullen.com and topazery.com have great intricately designed vintage inspired gemstone rings. I think they have a few inlaid rings also.

i just wanted to chime in since i work in a lab as well and know plenty of people who have massive (i mean 1 ct. or more) rings that they wear and never have a problem with wearing gloves. they also mostly all have high settings. don't feel like you need to only get a ring that is inset just because of the glove thing! get what you like! :thumbsup2

Thanks for all your help...I told my Dboyfriend everything and he told me the ohter day that he found a ring that he thought i would really like. So turns out that I may be getting that e-ring, sooner than I thought..:goodvibes However, I still have no idea when...:confused3

Thanks again for the suggestions!
