On the way back with Virgin to Manchester last month there were loads of empty seats and I noticed someone posting something similar about their outward journey recently.

Got me thinking - if that's normal does that mean that there's last minute bargains to be had even during summer hols (trying to get DW to go next year) ?

Nipped into BA shop today and sort of mentioned this to the lady helping me. She said that the scheduled airlines wouldn't sell these seats at reduced prices - they'd rather just leave them empty. Seemed strange.

Does anyone have any experience of getting cheap last minute BA or Virgin flights ?

No luck for us - we've booked a fairly last minute holiday - fly out 4 weeks today. We're in Scotland and the cheapest deal for Virgin was £864 for the 2 of us and then we would have had a shuttle flight on the top of that. BA even more expensive. We booked today with MyTravel for £686 total from Glasgow, only 40mins along the road and a direct flight. Only hope we don't have a 48hr delay!!! ;)
