So today I had a new employee start. She was an awesome interview through the whole process. We even raised the normal starting rate $2/per hour to match her price range because her skill set and personality were "just right".

90 minutes into the job she asked where the bathroom was, and NEVER CAME BACK!

In the 2 years we've had 3 other employees go to lunch and never come back. WHAT THE HECK?????

I am always very open and honest in all the interview stages and reiterate how busy, hectic, fast paced, and challenging the jobs I'm filling can be. I don't leave it a mystery.

I really don't understand people.

I've had that happen and I don't get it either.
But I'm glad they didn't waste anymore of my time

That is an odd way to handle whatever was upsetting her. :confused3 Maybe she underestimated the demands of the job.:confused3 How old was she?

I've had that happen as well... Better to find out they're a flake than 6 months from now when you've invested a lot of time and energy into them.

exactly!

That's bizarre. I've never understood how people could just walk out of their jobs like that with no notice. We had two paras in my classroom quit this year. One moved to another state with no notice, and one quit in the middle of the day because she couldn't handle the kids. First day back from winter break, and she just left after lunch and never came back. (She at least told us she was quitting, but still...)

Well you have all her information. Give her a call. Maybe she got lost coming back from the bathroom!!!!!! :lmao:

How ODD. :headache:

Okay, someone near and dear to me actually did this once.

They hired in as a telephone data person, meaning, they take information over the phone and input into a computer program. They were trained and such, then for the first day at work, it turned into a telemarketing job where they were yelled at and such if they didn't make their quotas by fooling people into buying things they didn't need.

The person I know went out for donuts and never came back.

So, I have no idea why people do that in a real job, but I can totally see it for scammers.

The fastest I ever had someone quit that I was training was by first break. We started at 8:00 and break was at 10:00.

She asked where she could to smoke and never came back. She said she couldn't stand ringing phones, all the while staring at a 20 line phone. (This was back in 1982) I wonder what kind of work she thought she'd be doing working as a residential customer service rep for a phone company?

WOW- That is so awkward (not to mention frustrating for you). After interviewing, new hire appointment, setting aside time for training, etc. that is a lot of time invested in

Here is some advice I can offer for the future....have a perspective employee actually WORK the job for a short shift before going ahead with the offer & new hire process. I think it is important for someone to actually DO the job to see if they enjoy it and can handle the demands. It can also show you, the supervisor, if that person is a right fit for your organization.

Good luck finding a replacement...sometimes don't ya just feel like you are running around in circles?

I can beat that. I was a deli manager and was training a new person one time that lasted 15 minutes. She quit as soon as she learned that she would be cooking food. Hello!!:confused3 That was what she was hired for. Just don't get it either.

About 10 years ago I hired 3 people (out of state) who never showed up.
One person actually came to town, checked into the hotel we arranged for them, checked out never to be seen again. :confused3

I can see leaving if the job isn't what you expected. If you were unemployed to begin with you might gamble and take off that way. It's cowardly though.

:eek:I have a confession:guilty: I did something similiar a few months ago.
I left my job of over 10 years to go work for a new attorney. I worked for this new attorney nights/weekends for over a month before I started "full-time". I thought this would give me a feel for the job.

I started hearing stories (while still at my old job) about one of the girls from the new office getting into a fist fight at the job and the police getting involved:eek:

So I ended up hating the job; the women were soo catty and petty. And sure enough 3 days into my job said girl almost got into a fist fight with AN ATTORNEY!

Then the boss yelled at me for not doing work that I didn't know belong to me! He also started questioning me, berating me as to whether I knew what the heck I was doing...:rolleyes1

I decided enough was enough, packed up my photos and left for the day, never to return!

Are you sure there's not a serial killer on your floor? :scared1:

Me neither, I can't believe that wouldn't come back to bite you on the rear later in life...like when trying to get another job....:confused3

How would that happen? No one, not even a person crazy enough to walk off a job on day one, would list the job on a resume!

About 35 years ago when I was working as an Internal Auditor for The Amercan Red Cross I was sent on a special visit to a Red Cross office on a military base. Shortly after I got there one of the staff left to go on a break and never returned. By the next afternoon I sent a message to the Regional Personnel Office recommending immediate termination for cause.
