Hello everyone! We've been waiting on official word that my daughter's dream was approved before starting the pre-trip report. We got word today! So here goes!

I'm Melissa. I'm a stay at home mom, and I'm married to my best friend, Mike. He's chief deputy in our county jail. We have two daughters, Abby who is 9, and Emily is 5. Emily is our dream/wish kid.

We're very boring people to be honest, lol! We live in a tiny rural town, and don't get out much :rotfl:. We have to travel so far to get anywhere, and well...Emily is one very expensive kiddo. I take pictures and lots of them and my husband is your typical law enforcement type. Our girls keep us very busy.

Speaking of the girls, they are way easier to talk about than myself, so I'll gush about them. Abby is the sweetest most giving kid you could ever meet. She's my straight A student, I never have to get onto her about anything, and you couldn't ask for a better big sister. She has an amazing eye for art and loves to create things. She's spent the summer at a local ranch/equestrian ministry and is learning so much. I can just see her interests blossoming. She's also stoked for school to start back. Yup, she's one of those kids, lol! She is as excited about Emily's dream Emily is and can't wait.
Here's some pics of Abby:

Emily, our wish kid. I don't even know where to start with this kid! She's brilliant and so animated, that there is not a day that goes by that we don't laugh. She has a love for and understanding of animals that goes far beyond the average child's and has been riding horses for several months now at the same ranch that my older daughter attends. She can sing like nobody's business. Unfortunately, her family are the only ones that get to enjoy her antics. She has difficulty in social situations and selective mutism. She's had health issues since birth, lots of random, seemingly unrelated issues which we finally discovered this year, were all due to mitochondrial disease. She's a squirt, standing at 39 inches tall, and just around 30lbs and will be 6 in November. Her biggest issue as a result of the Mito is GI dysmotility, meaning her gut just doesn't work. She is fed by tube directly into her intestines, and we drain her stomach as it doesn't empty on it's own. She also experiences a lot of issues, like muscle weakness, fatigue, temp. regulation problems, her vision is very poor, a simple cold usually means a week inpatient and her social issues all stem from her Mito. But, she is this awesome little critter, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. What she's been through has made her who she is, and who she is...is amazing. Her dream was to go to Disney World and meet Buzz Lightyear and Pluto. No princesses for my little tomboy! She's sooooo excited about Animal Kingdom, she can barely contain herself.

We are all newbies to Disney for the most part. I went once when I was 11 years old, so uh...without giving away my age, it was a loooong time ago. We are absolutely ecstatic and having a hard time even wrapping our minds around it! It's been a tough few years around here, not only with Emily's health, but it seems like we've had one hit after another. I wouldn't even start the pre-trip report until I got official world she was approved because it was too hard to believe it could actually happen!

I'm not sure what questions to ask or where to even start. Please feel free to give us any advice or info. you think might be helpful to Disney virgins.

Looking forward to planning with some experienced people. We don't have dates yet, and as far as that goes, we are totally open so we plan to tell them we can go whenever. We are also planning to drive. Wheelchair, a weeks worth of ready to feed formula, bags, meds, plus clothes for all of us....well, I just don't want to deal with all of it through an airport. Other than that, that's about all we have figured out in terms of what we want.

Um...I guess that's it for now. One final *happy dance*!

 Hi Melissa!
I was about to start my PTR and thought I would look around and read some others first. Your girls are beautiful! Here is some pixie dust for an amazing trip :wizard: Cant wait to read more about your plans!!!

Oh, and any questions ask away! Someone will know the answer.

Thank you! I don't even know where to start with questions! LOL! I don't even really know where to start to plan either. We are still sort of riding on the high of just hearing she was approved and that we are actually going to get to go! Amazing.

YAY on finally getting your dates!!!:banana::banana::banana::banana:

Your girls are beautiful!! Hope you get your dates SOON!!! It really didn't take us too long to get our dates from Dream Factory!! We are going Oct 1-7!!

Subbing to your pre-trippie!! Can't wait to hear all about your plans!!

Welcome!! Do you have any idea when you might be going? We too are waiting on dates. Your girls seem so sweet. Can't wait to hear how things unfold.

Pics of us...lol. Well, there aren't many in existance of me! I'm always behind the camera. But I happened to take a cruddy cell phone pic of myself to show my out of town family on FB my new hair. It was a big change, sooooo they wanted to see.

Dh isn't big on getting his pic taken in general, but I do have a few more of him hanging around that of myself.
Not the best of him, but here he is with the girls at the Dayton, OH Air Force Museum.

Emily's specialists are all in Columbus, Oh. We drive about 5 hours to get there and try to get them all together in the same few days. We had to stay over a weekend this last time, and decided to find some fun stuff to do while there.

Not sure when we will get our dates. The volunteer told us to expect to hear from the travel agent within the week. We hadn't given them any dates that were best for us, and told then we were open for anytime. My dh needs very little notice at work, and since I stay home...we're totally open.

Congrats on your trip and great start to your PTR! My DD is almost 8 and we've been to WDW a few times so feel free to fire away with questions!

Welcome and congratulations! You are in the right place. You will learn so much on these boards, and trip reports are probably the best source. I'll subscribe and keep up, and try to answer any questions you have. Give Kids the World Village is absolutely awesome. Have fun planning!!! And reconsider flying...:dance3:

LOL...we've thought about it and thought about it. We flew one time (the only time we've ever been anywhere and the first time flying for all of us), and Emily was almost 3. She didn't have as much stuff then, but did have her pump and some meds. It was very stressful for her going through security. They wanded and swabbed her, and patted her down. Had to look at her pump, etc. She's older now and even more apt to being super stressed and anxious. Then there's our own anxiety about the logistics of carry on's and checked baggage and all of her stuff. Neither of us want any anxiety in the trip at all. We have plenty of that in our regular day to day. It's about 12 hours to Orlando from here. We don't mind the drive and may just split it into two days. It will give the girls a chance to see things on the way they've never seen and may not see again, at least in childhood.

I don't really even know where to start, to be honest. Anybody have any tips on how to even start planning?

I would drive. TSA is getting more and more demanding in their searches. Just one less thing for you to worry about.

As far as planing with out dates I would start by looking at the Theme Park board and Disneyworld.com. Find out what rides and attractions you want to see. Do you have a WDW planing DVD? If not order one on the website, they are free and fun to watch. Also if you have Netflix there are a few Disney Park specials on instant watch. You can also go on YouTube and check out videos from the rides and shows to get a better idea on somethings.

I MEANT Congratulations on the WISH... I shouldn't post when I am tired! :lmao: Thanks for the PICS of you and DH...it helps to visualize who I am reading about! :goodvibes

We got dates! Well, I think anyway, lol. They were going to send us NEXT WEEK!!! But, I can't manage to get everything together in 6 days, so she said she was going to try for Aug. 19-25th. I actually am surprised that we would be going so soon. Despite the heat, I think August is probably a better choice, because of Emily's health. School means bugs and colds, and that means a very sick little girl and hospital time. She's had a great summer and is so plump and healthy right now, we will get to enjoy it so much more and not worry about her being sick when the trip does finally come around.

I haven't gotten a call back to confirm it, but she said it was pretty well wide open that week so it should be good to go.

I guess after it's booked, we sort out the details? I have no idea what to expect. How is a dream/wish trip different for a kid in the parks? I hear about a "magic button"? I'm also trying to figure out how much of our own money we will need. I feel so odd asking how much the expense check will be...*shudders*. I guess they deal with that all of the time though.

Are there best times, days of the week to go to certain parks? I'm not sure we'll do them all. Universal isn't really appealing to any of us, and Emily wants a day at the beach, so I think that we'll pass on Universal. Disney and Sea World are a must though, per Emily's orders. "My dream...my rules." she says!

Just had to come back and say dates are now officially confirmed!!! We leave Aug. 19th and come back on the 25th! So, we have a month to plan and I don't even know where to start!!!!

Congrats on your dates!!! Love the pics- I was a tom boy too! Love the wanting to see Buzz! Good choice! :thumbsup2

Wow! That is quick!

As for planning, how many days do you actually have in Florida. I know you said you were going to drive down. That will affect how much you can fit in while there. There are also a lot of activities at GKTW to consider fitting in too. It the beach a must do? There is so much to take advantage of during a WISH trip when you have the WISH button in the parks that it will be hard to fit in the beach too.

If you post questions on the WISH trip thread, Maroo and the others will have lots of good advice to offer too especially with the details of being involved in a WISH trip.

Let me know if you have any specific ride, meal or other general questions and I will try to help.

Yeah, the beach is part of her wish, so that's a must do. We plan to leave in the middle of the night, or maybe even the day before and get a hotel on the way. So we can arrive late afternoon in FL. Then we plan to leave late on the last day as well, and stay over probably on the way home. So we'll get probably 5 full days.

Most of my questions are wish trip related I guess. I mean, I can't really think of any planning exactly? We're very flexible about what day we do when and so forth. We're just so happy and thankful to have the opportunity to go, we'll just take it as it comes. :) I doubt we'd ever be able to go on our own expense, especially to be able to do as much as we are going to have the chance to do. It really does feel like a dream!

Melissa! I somehow missed that Miss E had gotten her dream approved, how awesome and exciting for you guys!!! :D

I would start by looking at park hours/days (subscribe to touringplans.com if you can, it's not terribly expensive,) decide where you want to go when, and book any sit-down dining if you guys are going to want it. Sit-down reservations (ADRs) are bookable at the 180 day mark, so for a last-minute trip you may have a difficult time getting reservations for some of the more "in" places. If you can't get what you want, keep trying back! Chances are something that will open up.

You could also get a good guidebook (Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World is a good one) and use it to get an idea of what attractions y'all might like. Once you know, you can look on the aforementioned touringplans.com and pick out some good touring plans that fit your family's needs!

Be sure to read up on FastPass, as it will help you miss the lines. They offer it at both Toy Story rides -- Buzz Lightyear in the Magic Kingdom and Toy Story Mania at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Be sure to get a TSM FP right away, though, they go like hotcakes! There will probably still be a decent crowd volume on your dates, which is why I stress all of the line-missing. (I am a bit of a snob about lines and hate waiting!)

One last thing would be to go visit Guest Relations when you arrive at the parks and ask them about some accomodations. Based on what I know of E, I think it would be helpful to be able to take her stroller into lines, so that she doesn't have to stand/wait. I believe Guest Relations can give you "permission" to do that; I think it's a "stroller as wheelchair" tag.

From what I have gathered, we won't need to worry about the fast pass with the "magic button" from Give Kids The World, or am I wrong about that? I guess I better figure that one out, lol. We have to hit the toy story rides! Emily has a wheelchair, it's a "stroller style" wheelchair, but I don't think it would be mistaken for a standard stroller. It's this one:http://www.adaptivemall.com/newcruiser12.html
Do you think I should get a tag just in case?

I'm getting a bit stressed. I'm waiting to hear back from the Dream volunteer for the answers, but since we decided to rent a car and drive down, we may have a lot of up front costs. We'd be reimbursed, but I'm not sure we can come up with the costs up front, so we may not even be able to go, unless we fly-which I truly believe would be too stressful for Emily. You'd have to meet her to understand, but she's one tough little nut to crack sometimes.

So, I may have written a pre-trip report too soon :sad2:.

Ok, I think we are ok. *happy dance* and sigh of relief! They will provide gas cards, and while I'm still not 100% (since we've never rented a vehicle before), it looks like we don't pay for it up front anyway? So relieved. Our expense check isn't as much as it seems a lot of people get, but that must vary by chapter depending on how much funding each chapter has. So we think we will need to come up with a little money of our own as a "just in case" thing.

So, looks like this really will be happening! It's so hard to believe!
